“RAG” IN PARADISE

STUDENTS’ FUN WITH A CARAVAN POLICE PROVIDE AMUSEMENT ADELAIDE, June 2, While they cheered a blushing policeman and sang "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” 35 University students from all parts of Australia had theii names taken by a constable at Paradise, a small market-gardening centre near Adelaide recently. Earlier in the afternoon the party had dragged the Highways Department sleeping caravan from the side of the centre of the Gorge Road. After piling most of the movable fittings across the roadway and placing a "Road Closed” on each side, they threw a bicycle on top for luck. They then pelted the whole collection with apples and departed. Constable Appears A very angry employee of the department got in touch with Constable M. Halloran at the Campbelltown police station, and he intercepted the party of students, who were in two charabancs, and took their names. The students, who included representatives of Melbourne , Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane, and Adelaide Universities, had been for a picnic to the Gorge, a well-known Adelaide beauty spot. They had purchased two cases of apples during the trip, and, in addition to those eaten and used in pelting the Highways Department caravan, it is alleged that they greeted a minister who passed on a bicycle with a slavo of “selected” frnit. After the charabancs had been halted by the constable, the party waited for about fifteen minutes for a representative of the Highways Department to arrive. He was greeted with three heartily given “hoots,” while the constable was lustily cheered. Constable Halloran was subjected to a running fire of comment as he took a record of the names of the party, and when he inadvertently put down one address as “Carlton Brewery” instead of just Carlton he was given an extra round of cheers—led by the Melbourne students.

The people of Paradise don’t know whether to thank the students or the constable for the best afternoon’s entertainment they have had for years.
