Australia eliminated France in the Davis Cup (European zone) series today, when J. H. Crawford (Australia) beat C. Boussus, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 9-7. A. Merlin (France) later beat V. B. McGrath, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Australia will now meet Germany. Play in Singles. Boussus began in inspired fashion, hitting audacious winners, sharply angled, with both forehand and backhand. He soon led 5-1 and, returning Crawford's best shots, took the set. The crowd was greatly excited. Crawford was down 2-4 in the second set; then he won four games in a row and took the set. In the third set Crawford, playing with normal consistency, went to a 5-3 lead and, advancing to the net, forced his opponent into errors. Boussus in the fourth set played with J the same brilliance as in the first, making placements to all parts of the court. The Australian led 3-0, 4-1 and 5-3 in the final set, but Boussus, attacking Crawford’s backhand and advancing to the net for angled volley winners, j evened at 5-5, with the spectatois i cheering madly. Crawford captured his opponent’s | sendee for a 6-5 lead, hut Boussus retaliated by taking Crawford’s service. Crawford concentrated on keeping the ball in play and waiting for Boussus j to make mistakes. Crawford had three match points before he finally won, after a most ex- , citing rally. The match lasted 25 hours. With the tie won the Merlin-Mc-Grath match was more in the nature of an exhibition. McGrath had insufficient pace to maintain the attack and his form was poor.
