’QUAKES IN QUETTA
SERIOUS SHOCKS CONTINUE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 11, 7.50 p.m.) CALCUTTA, June 11. Earthquake shocks continue daily at Quetta. Two severe shocks took place at the week-end, one being almost as bad as the original. Over 20,000 persons have been evacuated since June 1, the majority belonging to the Sind and Punjab. It is revealed that between June 1 and June 7, 14,000 telegrams reached Quetta and that over 3000 are still undelivered. The addressees are believed to have perished. It is estimated that the damage to Government and military buildings and railway property totals nearly £2,000,000. The private damage is incalculable.
Among the miraculous escapes was that of an Indian woman who was dug out of wreckage after two days, during which time she had given birth to a child. Both are well. The Government is not likely to decide for some time whether to rebuild the city on an earthquake-proof basis or to choose a fresh site.
