ROYAL VISIT TO EAST END
KING’S WONDERFUL RECEPTION CHEERED BY PEOPLE OF MANY RACES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 13. Tremendous enthusiasm attended the surprise visit to the East End by the King and Queen and Princess Elizabeth. The Royal car was accompanied by two police cars and a wireless van. People ran cheering beside the Royal car providing a self-appointed escort. Cars and cyclists fell in behind their Majesties who drove through Chinatown, Dockland, Poplar and Limehouse Causeway, where no street, however narrow, and no house, however humble, lacked decorations. The Chinese leapt to their feet and cheered, the Lascars at West and, India Docks salaamed. Everywhere the crowds almost brought the Royal car to a standstill. Men jumped on the footboards and wildly acclaimed the King and Queen, who were startled and almost awed by the vigour of the greetings. Red, White and Blue House The farthest point of their Majesties’ drive to-day was the Limehouse, where the chauffeur was instructed to seek a house which the occupier had painted red, white and blue. She was an old age pensioner, who told the press: “I hadn’t any bunting to put beside my coronation flag so I dyed and hung out some pillow-cases and then painted the whole front of the house. I longed so much to see the Jubilee procession on Monday but I did not dare to face the jostling crowds. Imagine my joy when their Majesties came and stopped to look at my house to-day. The King raised his hat and the Queen gave me a smile that I will remember to my dying day.” The enthusiasm was renewed in the Jewish quarter. Their Majesties received an ovation from a huge crowd when they returned to Buckingham Palacd. His Majesty sent a message to the Viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon, stating that the King-Emperor was deeply touched by the enthusiasm with which the Silver Jubilee was celebrated in India. The newspapers pay tribute to Scotland Yard’s success in making Silver Jubilee week almost without crime. A few minor offences were reported. National Rejoicing The “Sunday Express" says that the King wrote every word of his broadcast and Westminster Hall speeches himself. He turned for guidance only to the Queen, who suggested some happy, homely phrases. Another source says that his Majesty is ten years younger since the Silver Jubilee. He was always somewhat shy, but he now feels thoroughly assured of the personal affection of his people. Royal Silver Jubilee thanksgiving services were held throughout Britain to-day. The Duke of Gloucester attended an observance at Belfast Cathedral. Hyde Park was the scene of an openair service, which was attended by 100,000 people who earnestly participated in the community hymn singing. A Jubilee thanksgiving service unique in the history of Wimbledon, was held on the centre court, 100,000 people filling the stands. Territorial and Salvation Army Bands, many district units of Cadets and Boy Scouts attended, the Mayor taking the salute during the march past.
