FORESTERS’ LODGE At the monthly meeting of Court Progress, Bro. G. R. Marshall, C.R.. presided over a good attendance of members. The woodwards reported that during the month one member was declared on the funds. Bro. Marshall reported on the South Canterbury District A.O.P. annual meeting, and Bro. H. Pugh, P.C.R., reported on Court Foresters’ Pride Jubilee. One new member was initiated. At the conclusion of the general business a social hour was spent. A COMING OF AGE To celebrate the coming of age of their second daughter, Joyce, Mr and Mrs Coles, Bluecliffs Road, St. Andrews, entertained a number of friends at their home. A pleasant evening was spent in social games and competitions. Miss Joyce later was the recipient of many gifts. Those present were Misses Marion Coles, Marion Hutton, Nancy Spencer, Daisy Bell, Carol Bell, Winnie Lister, Jean Lister, Nancy Coles, Vivian Coles, Mr and Mrs Coles, Messrs Frank and Ernest Coles and A. Hutton. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs E. Dash have left on a visit to Wellington. Miss Amy Dash is spending her holidays at the home of her parents. Miss M. Gray is spending a short holiday at Esk Valley. . Miss D. Knox is on a holiday visit to Ashburton. . Miss N. Slattery is paying a visit to her parents at Timaru. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS To commemorate the silver jubilee of the King and Queen, the children of the St. Andrews and Esk Valley schools and a large number of parents gathered on Friday afternoon. After the singing of the National Anthem and patriotic songs, the chairman of the St. Andrews school committee, Mr P. F. Dix, outlined the purpose of the gathering and introduced the Rev. J. Milburn Stewart, of Timaru, who gave an inspiring address. At the close of the address the pupils of both schools were presented with books received from the Canterbury Education Board and Souvenir Button Badges. Mr P. F. Dix, on behalf of the St. Andrews school committee thanked Mr Stewart for his address. Mr James Stowell, chairman of the Esk Valley school, also spoke on similar lines and thanked the headmaster of St. Andrews, Mr H. L. Wimsett and the school committee for their invitation to take part in the celebration. The children were later entertained at afternoon tea, and sweets were handed round. The service closed wtlh cheers for the King and Queen the committee and parents. A fine response was made on Sun-
day afternoon to the invitation to a special national thanksgiving service at St. Andrews in connection with the King’s jubilee. The local Friendly Societies paraded and marched to tho Presbyterian Church, where their numbers swelled the congregation, so that it filled the building. Rev. L. J. Hudson presided over a very fitting and inspiring service, during which a duet was sung by Mr and Mrs Turple and a solo by Mr Alex. Nicoi, of Timaru. The address on “the King as a gift of God to the Empire,” was given by the Rev. A. Begg, M.A.
