AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS PROMINENCE OF NEW SOUTH WALES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 12, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 12. For the third successive year, New South Wales won the King’s Cup for the eight-oared championship of Australia, and Turner, of New South Wales, established a record performance by Winning the Australian sculling championship for the fourth successive year. The events tvere rowed on the Nepean River, at Penrith in fine weather, and in good water. The results were as follow: King’s Cup; three miles—New South Wales 1, Western Australia 2, South Australia 3, Victoria 4, Tasmania 5, Greeland 6. Won by two-thirds of a length, four lengths between second and third. Time, 16min. 21 l-ssec. New South Wales led at the quartermile, and thereafter fought out the issue with Western Australia, with South Australia a close third. For a good two miles there was practically nothing between the two leading crews, and until the last quarter of a mile South Australia were still within striking distance. The heavier New South Wales crew managed to draw away slightly in the final burst, but Western Australia fought gamely and the local crew was fully extended to win. Sculling championship of Australia; 2i miles—H. Turner (New South Wales) 1, C. Peppier (Victoria) 2, C. Slaughter (Quensland) 3, H. Wilkinson (Tasmania) 4. Won easily by 48 seconds, with threequarters of a length between second and third. Time, 16min 36 3-ssec. Turner never looked like losing.
