A large number of parents assembled with the children at Glen-iti school cn Friday afternoon to celebrate the silver jubilee of His Majesty the King. Mr C Morse, chairman of the school committee, introduced the Rev. J. Baird, who briefly addressed the gathering, after which Mr W. After 'the singing of "God Save the King,” those present adjourned to the schoolroom where souvenir mugs were presented to each pupil by Mr Baird, and afternoon tea was partaken of. Advantage was also taken at this gathering, of bidding farewell to Miss Southgate, assistant teacher, who is leaving for Akaroa. Mr C. Lady Day left with hsr husbqnd, Sir Cecil Day, for England by the Rangitata yesterday. For over twenty years Sir Cecil and Lady Day have lived in The Cottage in the grounds of Government House in Wellington, and have taken a leading part in connection with the work of several of the King’s representatives in New Zealand. These have included Lord Islington, the Earl of Liverpool, Earl Jellicoe, Sir Charles Fergusson, Lord Bledisloe, and now the present GovernorGeneral, Viscount Galway. At a reception given in honour of Lady Day, in Wellington recently, she was presented by Mrs C. W. Earl on behalf of the committee with a New Zealand travelling rug. Lady Day, in reply, expressed warm appreciation of all the good wishes that had been expressed and of the gift that had been made to her and to Sir Cecil, and said that she would look forward to their return.

If the nails are dry and brittle and the quicks hard, as they often are at the end of the winter, try this daily manicure: Lather the finger-tips first in warm water and soap, let them soak for five minutes. Rinse in clear warm water and dry. Wrap a piece of cotton-wool round the end of an orange-wood stick, dip in olive oil, and gently push back the cuticle from the bases of the nails; then file the nails from the sides to the centre, drawing the file only one way (not backwards and forwards) with long strokes. Nail lacquer, or varnish, should not be used if the cuticle is liable to break, but the nails may be polished with a cream or powder.
