MR PATERSON'S CAMPAIGN

ADDRESS AT WEST SCHOOL Mr A. M. Paterson continued his campaign at the West School last night, when he addressed an attendance of 15. Mr E. Laverty, chairman of the School Committee, presided. Mr Paterson, who explained that he did not mean any disrespect by holding his meeting on the night of the King’s Jubilee, briefly recapitulated his Mayoral programme, with special reference to the need for the health of the community being maintained. Mr J. M. C. McLeod said that in his address Mr Paterson had said he considered that the Timaru milk supply was probably the purest in the world. How did he arrive at that statement? Mr Paterson said that when he

started inspecting herds in this district 25 years ago it was found that 75.6 of the cows were infected with tuberculosis. Since then the herds had been cleaned up until the trouble was

now infinitesimal. Mr McLeod said that there were about 60 milk vendors operating in Timaru, and he wondered how Mr Paterson could make the statement.

Mr Paterson replied that he was dealing with the milk from the producing point of view. In reply to a further question, Mr Paterson said he would support a hygienic milk supply as soon as it was possible to establish it. Questioned by Mr McLean as to whether he thought there could be any improvement in omnibus fares or

timetables in Timaru, Mr Paterson said that the buses were not paying, and it was to make good the losses on such services that the Council had to “pinch” from the Electricity Department’s income. He would certainly be prepared to carry out an experiment bv lowering the fares. On the motion of Messrs T. Hacker and G. A. McLean the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
