“This is not a smoking carriage, sir,” said the guard as he hurried into a first-class compartment, occupied as it chanced by only one passenger, “no smoking allowed here.” “But I’m not smoking aloud,” said the passenger, with a twinkle in his eye, “I’m smoking quite noiselessly.” The guard looked annoyed. “I must ask you”— he began. And then a silver coin changed hands, and touching his cap the guard smilingly withdrew. Well, circumstances do alter cases. You may, for instance, buy a tin of tobacco and find it precious poor stuff —injurious, too, perhaps. Bad tobacco often is.
