LIFE IN TROPICS
EFFECT ON CHARACTER Judge Wells, of North Australia, says he does not believe a contention of Mr W. J. P. Fitzgerald, a Darwin barrister, that a man can fall into error in many ways in the tropics. In the Northern Territory Supreme Court lately, in the course of the hearing of an assault case, Mi- Fitzgerald said: “We are in Darwin. We are In the Northern Territory. We are in the tropics. We do things here that we would not dream of doing in the south.” Judge Wells: If I were you, I would speak for yourself. The people of Darwin . might not appreciate your sentiments concerning them. Mr Fitzgerald said that there were many ways in which a man could fall into error in the tropics. Judge Wells: I do not believe a word of it. Mr Fitzgerald: Perhaps Your Honour has not yet had a sufficiently long experience of the tropics. Judge Wells: No. Well, niy personal belief is that most of the crooked people in the territory were crooked before they came into it.
