INTEREST WANES IN MAY DAY

NOTABLE UNCONCERN . IN GERMANY LIVELY PARTICIPATION IN U.S.A. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 2, 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, May 2. May Day celebrations in Germany were marred by a snowstorm. Plans for an open-air demonstration in Munich were suddenly abandoned, the official excuse being the inclemency of the weather. The unofficial reason was the failure of the workers to turn out in sufficient numbers. Though last year 50,000 attended a similar parade, to-day only a few hundred arrived. Later in the day, an indoor meeting was attended by 4000. There is a growing disinclination on the part of the Bavarian workers to attend demonstrations.

The only really impressive Labour demonstration was in Moscow.

Ignored In Many Countries May Day displays were ignored in Italy, Bulgaria and Rumania, while in Austria thousands of Vienna’s poorest unemployed, mostly old women, waited many hours, expecting the distribution of free meals. They were disappointed, as the official arrangements provided an inadequate quantity of food. So the unemployed went hungry. The public services in France functioned normally. There was not a single arrest in Paris in May Day disorders, which is a record. RADICALS DEMONSTRATE RED BANNERS IN NEW YORK United Press Association—By El«ctrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 2, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 1. Between 100,000 and 150,000 Radicals demonstrated here to-day in the traditional fashion, celebrating the International Labour Day. Because of the continued inability to form a “United Front,” tjie Communists and Socialists held separate parades through the downtown business section. The Communists claimed 60,000 marchers, and the Socialists about twice as many, although the police estimates indicated about half that number. The Communists carried the usual gaudy Red banners, denouncing war, Fascism and other “manifestations of capitalism.” Thousands of police guarded the line of the march, but there was no disorder* or violence. In fact, most of the demonstrators displayed a carnival spirit rather than a revolutionary aspect. Smaller Left Wing demonstrations were held in the principal cities throughout the nation, as in Mexico City and most of the capitals of South America, but with little or no violence being reported.

HITLER WARNS GERMANY STRONG APPEAL TO YOUTH United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Berlin, May 1. Shouting hoarsely owing to his throat being sore, Reichsleader Herr Hitler forecast that storms were converging on Germany, when he addressed a large gathering, including 27,000 children assembled in front of the Imperial Palace, despite the slush and snow in which the May Day cele-

brations were opened. Herr Hitler declared: “As the wind now tears our flags, so the clouds and storms may surround Germany in the near future. The Hitler Youth will not be afraid. Every German boy and girl must be convinced of his and her sacred duty to guarantee Germany’s security.”

A crowd of 1,000,000 workers assembled at Templehof aerodrome, only a doctor’s certificate excusing employees’ non-attendance at the assembly. Herr Hitler began his address in a snowstorm. He surprisingly refrained from reference to foreign affairs. It is supposed that he is reserving this for his address in the Reichstag on May 15. He merely said: “We do not want war, but Germany is no longer the toy of foreign whims.” He added: “You offer me kingdoms; I would rather be a poor man among his people.” REDS ACTIVE IN AUSTRIA HUNDREDS OF ARRESTS IN VIENNA United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright VIENNA, May 1. The police swooped down on the Communist headquarters and arrested 500, as a sequel to the throwing of a bomb in a police station in a suburb of Vienna, wounding four. Three policemen and five Commune ists were killed in riots in the Bulgarian village of Enina. Six hundred political prisoners were freed under the May Day amnesty.

Thirty new super-fast attacking monoplanes. two-motored machines, with a speed of 200 miles an hour participated in a parade of army, navy and tank units, which was held. Civilian processions followed, featuring an enormous serpent, typifying Imperialism, wearing a Japanese cap over

a pig’s snout, marked with the Swastika. Similar parades were held in other cities. MAY DAY IN CANADA POLICE ROUT COMMUNISTS United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph —Copvright VANCOUVER, May 1. May Day in Canada passed without disorder. A blizzard with a foot of snow and a howling gale, routed 5000 Communist coal miners, who were marching on the town of Corbin, in British Columbia, following strike riots, with the avowed intention of driving out the provincial police. At Vancouver, 12,000 people paraded, sang the “International,” and refused to carry the Union Jack. STREETS GUARDED IN sr.AIN NO DISORDER IN MADRID United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright MADRID, May 1. On May Day the troops were confined to their barracks, though armed guards patrolled the streets. MAY DAY IN RUSSIA SERIOUS CLASH REPORTED United Press Association—By sHectrio Telegraph—Copyright MOSCOW, May 1. May Day opened with a Communist riot at Bagnolet, knives and revolvers being freely used. One person was killed.
