At the wool sales keen competition continued, with a very good clearance made at late rates. The market closed strongly. Merino and fleece wool sold to 17d; scoured to 23id. Competition was more animated at the wool sales, and values were fully firm with a hardening tendency. Top prices for greasy were 16d and for scoured 26£d. LONDON WOOL SALE PROSPECTS GENERALLY FAVOURABLE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright LONDON, April 30. Wool available for the sales on May 8 totals 160.000 bales, including new arrivals of Australian. 21,400 bales, and New Zealand, 42,500 bales. It is expected that 166,000 bales will be catalogued. Prospects for the sales are generally regarded as favourable. It is expected that firmness of overseas markets will be reflected here. Germans have been buying actively in South Africa and South America and it is expected that they will operate in London. It is reported that Germany’s barter scheme with South Africa has not been as successful as was anticipated. There is a considerable number of Jewish businessmen in South Africa, especially connected with mining, and as retaliation against Hitler’s treatment of their co-religionists they are refusing to take German goods.
