THEFT OF GOLD

SENTENCE OF SEVEN YEARS United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, April 29. Cecil Swanland, aged 47, an artist, was sentenced to seven years penal servitude on a charge of stealing gold worth £21,000 from the strong-room at the Croydon aerodrome on March 4. Two other men, Silvio Mazzarda, aged 38, and John O'Brien, aged 74, were acquitted of a similar charge. Swanland had seven previous convictions. He left the dock smiling. Counsel urged that Swanland was not involved until after the gold was stolen. He denied participation in the theft.
