SHOOTING SEASON
PROSPECTS VERY BRIGHT Prospects for the shooting season, which opens to-morrow are better than they have been for some years, according to the ranger to the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr F. W. Pellett). Mr Pellett said yesterday that apart from the fact that it had been a good breeding season and that birds were plentiful, the rains experienced in the autumn had ensured a plentiful supply of natural food which would attract game to ponds. The bulk of the shooting available in South Canterbury was on private property, and owners had reported large flocks of grey duck in all parts of the Society's district. The recent weather gives promise of an ideal morning for the opening, wet weather with a cold south-westerly wind keeping the birds on the plains and flying comparatively low. Although he had been ranging the shooting waters of the district thoroughly for some weeks, he had not yet detected any cases of illegal shooting, continued Mr Pellett. In his opinion the poacher was not nearly so active as in earlier times.
