TRIBUTES TO MAYOR
FINAL MEETING OF COUNCIL At the conclusion of business at last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, Cr. P. B. Foote said that as the meeting was the last of the present Council, he desired to take the opportunity of congratulating the Mayor on the term of office which was about to close He thought all Councillors would agree that the Mayor had handled the affairs of the borough with credit to himself and with benefit to the town. As a Councillor he. with others, had not always agreed with the Mayor, but he admired the firmness with which he had handled the Council in its deliberations, and he admired the time and study the Mayor had given to Council affairs. In their reports the Mayor and the chairmen of committees had covered the various items of progress, but he did not think that any one of them had done full justice to the advancement which had been made, and he was satisfied that credit for a great deal of what had been achieved rested with the Mayor. Cr. Foote then moved that a vote of thanks be passed to the Mayor for the manner in which he had conducted the business of the Council during the iast two years, and also to the Mayoress for the excellent manner in which she had performed her duties. The motion was seconded by Cr. F. B. Hawkey, who said that he appreciated the manner in which the Mayor had controlled the affairs of the borough. and the manner in which ne had carried out his social activities. Cr. W. H. Hall also paid a tribute to the manner in which the Mayor had performed his duties. He said that various associations in the town petitioned tlie Council for consideration, but members of the Council when they came to the table did not represent any area, but were there for the benefit of the town as a whole. The Mayor had given a good lead, and was deserving of every credit.
Cr. H. J. Mathers also spoke iu appreciative terms. He said that thev had lived within their means, had not borrowed any money, and had effected improvements to the streets. He also congratulated the Mayoress on the manner in which she had carried out her duties at social functions. The motion was carried unanimously. The Mayor thanked Councillors for their kindly remarks, stating that he greatly appreciated them, more especially as they were unexpected. He particularly appreciated the references made to the Mayoress, stating that she had not spared herself in any way m the carrying out of her duties. Throughout his term he had endeavoured to do his best, and no-one could do any more.
