JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS A meeting of the business men was held in the Pipe Band room, Fairlie, on Friday. Mr G. Lyons explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of considering the form in which the Jubilee celebrations will be carried out hi the township. Mr Lyons asked Mr C. J. Talbot to take the chair, as the meeting was'not a meeting of the Association, Mr Talbot explained that it had been decided to carry out certain work in the township by way of a Jubilee memorial. The sub-committee formed to carry out the celebrations had decided that the business men be asked to help by doing something in the way of organising a- procession of decorated and trade displays. It was also decided that a sports programme should be carried out on the show grounds. In the evening, the Fire Brigade had undertaken to make a bonfire and give a display of fireworks, etc. As a final, a jubilee ball would be held in the Aorangi Hall. Mr Talbot said he was pleased to say that the Albury people had agreed to join in with the celebrations at Fairlie and so make the celebrations a county affair.
Mr D. Jeune, County Engineer, exhibited a plan of the proposed work in the main street. Grass plots would be made down the centre of the main street, additional trees would be planted to complete the present row, a concrete kerb six inches in height would be made round each plot. Mr Jenue said he thought that when complete, the appearance of the main street would be greatly improved. The question of a procession was fully discussed, and it was decided that the Pipe Band should be asked to head a procession from the Township to the Show Grounds. Business peop?e and others are to be asked to do what they can to make the procession a success by decorating vehicles, etc. A prize would be given for the best decorated turn out.
Regarding refreshments at the show grounds, it was decided that tea would be provided at 2.30 p.m., those attending to be asked to bring along their owr. cups. Sandwiches and buns would be provided. The following sub-committee was appointed to take charge of the refreshments: Messrs P. Neilson, J. Braddick, J. Sullivan, J. Caskey, W. Surridge, J. A. Fraser, and H. Foden.
Mr Caskey proposed and Mr Foden seconded and it was carried, that the townspeople should be asked to decorate the business premises with greenery. Mr Talbot said that the County Council would supply the necessary greenery. It was decided that a meeting of all committees be held in the Pipe Band room on Frdiay, May 3, at 8 p.m. Messrs W. Scott, S. Pocock and D. Jeune were appointed to arrange for suitable lighting in the township.
