PRINCESS DOREEN’S GOOD WIN By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. April 22. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opened to-day. The weather was*fine but dull and the course in good order. The attendance was excellent. The totalisator investments were £32,027/10/- compared with £31,786/10/- on the first day last year. Results:— KILDARE BRUSH HURDLES Of 160 sovs; 2 miles. 3/4—Palmary, 9.9 (Beale) 1 8/B—Nightcap. 9.0 (Murfitt) 2 4/3 —Jolly Beggar, 9.7 (Turner) .. .. 3 Also started: 5/5 Rasouli 11.1, 1/2 Pahu 10.1, 2/1 Fleeting Glance 9.11, 7/6 Coll 9.0, 6/7 Radiant Rose 9.0. Nightcap opened up a gap going out of the straight and at the mile was eight lengths clear of Coll, with Fleeting Glance, Palmary and Pahu next. Jolly Beggar was in second place to Nightcap at the far turn, but Palmary improved his position across the top and was second behind Nightcap at the home turn, followed by Jolly Beggar, Coll and Fleeting Glance. Nightcap and Palmary landed together over the last fence but in the run to the post Palmary won from Nightcap by two lengths, with Jolly Beggar six lengths away. Rasouli was fourth. Time, 3min 39sec. CHAMPAGNE STAKES. Of 400 sovs; 6 furlongs. 3/3—Kinnoull, 8.10 (A. E. Ellis) .. .. 1 1/I—Heritage, 8.10 (Atkins) 2 2/2—Hororata, 8.8 (Russell) 3
Also started: 4/4 Greek Shepherd 8.10, 6/6 Heloise 8.8, 5/5 Silver Sail 8.8. Silver Sail and Kinnoull were the early leaders, but on to the course proper Kinnoull and Hororata led with Heritage and Silver Sail next. Kinnoull and Heritage drew out at the distance and in a close finish, Kinnoull beat Heritage by a neck, with Hororata two lengths away. Greek Shepherd was fourth. Time, lmin 12 3-ssec. AUTUMN PLATE HANDICAP. Of 200 sovs; II miles. 1/I—Golden King, 8.5 (Messervy) .. 1 2/2—Chidden, 7.13 (Kirwan) 2 8/B—Glow Light, 7.0 (Gunn) 3 Also started: 3/3 Sky Rover 7.2, 6/5 Earthquake 7.9, 4/4 Importance 7.8, 5/6 Star Raider 7.2, 7/7 Pawky 7.1. Glowlight and Golden King were the leaders rounding the far turn and were followed across the top by Earthquake, Sky Rover and Chidden. Glowlight and Golden King still led at the course proper from Earthquake and Chidden. Gold King finished best and won by a length from Chidden with Glowlight two lengths away. Earthquake was fourth. Time, 2min 8 2-ssec. RUSSLEY PLATE HANDICAP. Concert Pitch began smartest and led on to the course proper from Gray Honour, Viking, Tail Light, Silver Fox and Fiord. In the run home Concert Pitch was not troubled and won by two lengths from Gray Honour, with Viking half a length away. Tail Light was fourth. Time, lmin lsec.
GREAT EASTER HANDICAP. Of 600 sovs; 7 furlongs. 2/2—Princess Doreen, 8.5 (A. E. Ellis) 1 1/I—Rerepai, 7.11 (Humphries) .. .. 2 8/6—Kemal Pasha,. 7.5 (Hibberd) .. 3 Also started: 6/10 Inflation 8.6, 7/8 Rebel Chief 8.6, 9/9 Silver Streak 7.13, 4/4 Cranford 7.12, 10/7 Sam Smith 7.9, 3/5 Tauramai 7.9, 14/14 Gay Crest 7.7, 13/12 Variant 7.1, 5/3 Tizzy 7.0, 11/13 Sea Fox 7.0, 12/11 Tuirau 7.0, 15/15 Royal Sceptre 7.0. Princess Doreen was first to show out, but Royal Sceptre soon went to the front and led across the top from Cranford, Rebel Chief, Rerepai, Tizzy, Princess Doreen, Silver Streak and Tuirau. Rerepai and Royal Sceptre were the leaders rounding the far turn with Cranford, Rebel Chief, Tizzy, Silver Streak and Princess Doreen next. Rerepai and Princess Doreen drew out at the distance, the latter winning by a length from Rerepai, with Kemal Pasha half a length away third. Sea Fox was fourth. Time, lmin 25 2-ssec. COURTENAY HANDICAP. Of IgO sovs; 6 furlongs. 4/4—Linguist, 8.3 (Pine) 1 11/11—Frenchie, 8.8 (Bryce) . . .. ~ 2 5/5 —Song Boy, 8.13 (Beale) 3 Also started: 6/6 Delium 9.0, 1/1 Joyous 8.1, 12/12 Polygraph 8.9, 2/2 Dover Patrol 8.9, 8/9 Master Tony 6.8, 13/13 Zionist 8.8, 7/8 Isaacs 8.8, 3/3 Tooley Street 8.5, 10/10 Princess Rawene 8.3, 9/7 Rebel Queen 8.3. When the field reached the course proper those most prominent were Dover Patrol, Tooley Street, Joyous, Rebel Queen, Song Boy, Polygraph and Linguist. The' last named finished best and won by a length from Frenchie with Song Boy a neck away third. Joyous was fourth. Time, lmin 13 2-ssec. ' SOCKBURN HANDICAP. Of 160 sovs; 7 furlongs. 10/10—Patrole, 7.7 (Storey) 1 4/5 —Colombo, 7.13 (Jennings) .. ..2 2/3—Manetho, 9.9 (Kirwan) 3 Also started: 1/1 Moonbeam 8.11, 3/4 Red Dance 8.2, 5/4 Owlsgleam 7.13 and Silly Owl 7.7 bracketed, 6/6 Knowledge 7.8, 8/8 Hot Stuff 7.7, 9/9 Lady Zephyr 7.7, 7/7 Lowater 7.7. When the field had settled down Patrole had charge and led across the top from Red Dance, Lowater, Colombo and Owlsgleam. Patrole and Colombo were the leaders into the straight with Lowater. Red Dance and Manetho next. Patrole stayed on and won by a neck from Colomb'o, with Manetho a similar distance away third. Red Dance was fourth. Time, lmin 27sec.
