THE BASKETBALL CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The third annual general meeting of the Geraldine Basketball Club was held in the Cadena tearooms on Monday night, the retiring chairman (Mr D. C. McKechnie) presiding over an attendance of approximately 30 members. The annual report and balance-sheet (previously published) were adopted. The following new members were elected: Misses N. Smith, S. Powell, J. Lapthorn. R. Barrett, Joyce Hewson, E. Murray, M. Willis, P. Sutherland and M. Collins. A motion of sympathy was passed with the president (Mrs B. R. Macdonald) and it was decided to write conveying the members’ best wishes for a speedy recovery. The chairman referred to the good work carried out during the year by Miss C. Turner (club captain and coach) and Miss M. Lysaght (secretary) , both of whom had been foundation members, and who were retiring from active association with the club. It was decided to record a minute of appreciation. The chairman suggested the need for the duties of officers to be set out, so that overlapping would be avoided and the maximum co-ordination would be gained. The schedule of duties was adopted. Subscriptions were fixed at 2/6, and it was decided to continue paying insurance out of subscriptions, members becoming insured as they paid their subscriptions. It was decided to recommend to the committee that a senior B team and two junior teams be entered in the Temuka and District Basketball SubAssociation’s competition. An opening practice was fixed for tomorrow, arrangements being left to the club captain. It was decided to leave the grading of teams to the committee. The following were nominated as referees: Misses M. Kerr, S. Powell, M. Knibb, E. Waters. It was decided to have the same ni- , form as last year, but to shorten the skirts to the knees. Meeting of Committee. A meeting of the committee was then held, Miss Ray presiding. It was decided to hold meetings every three weeks. The club captain, secretaries, treasurer and a vice-president were appointed to attend to routine matters each week. It was decided to ask the referees ; nominated to become members of the club, the club to pay their affiliation fees to the Referees’ Association and to provide rule books. It was decided that captains and vice-captains be elected at the games on April 11. It was decided to appoint Misses Joan Lapthorn, May Gaby, Rita Glover, Daphne Undrill and M. C. C. Knight, the basketball representatives on the combined basketball-football clubs’ dance committee. The following games have been arranged to take place at the High School grounds to-morrow: Rover seniors v. School: Jessie Vincent, Molly Powell, Rita Glover; Nellie McCullough, L. BUSINESSMEN’S ASSOCIATION A meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Businessmen’s Association was attended by the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Messrs E. Twigg, A. G. Brown, D. Macdonald, R. P. Craig, E. Undrill, B. Logan and C. S. Davies. An apology was received from Mr J. H. Woolhouse. The committee agreed that the customary holidays should be observed at Easter (Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday). In regard to the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty, it was decided to close the shops on Monday, May 6, and the secretary of the Association was instructed to co-operate with the School Committee and the Geraldine Borough Council if any commemorative function should be arranged. It was decided to ask shopkeepers to decorate their premises with bunting for the Jubilee week. Miss M. Cruckshank (president) and Mrs H. V. Firman (assistant secretary) appeared as a deputation from the Geraldine Women’s Institute seeking the Association’s co-operation in connection with the community sing arranged by the Institute, at which Mr Alan Brown, Christchurch, will conduct proceedings, in aid of the Geraldine Benevolent Guild’s annual appeal. The deputation was informed that the Businessmen’s Association could not assist as an Association, but individual members readily promised their assistance. The Association decided to sponsor the nomination of Mr Bruce Logan as a candidate for the Geraldine Borough Council at the forthcoming election. The secretary was instructed to write expressing the Association's sympathy to Messrs S. H. Willis and J. R. Lack in connection with the loss they had suffered in the recent fire at their business premises; and also to write 'O the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade expressing appreciation of their prompt turn out and efficient work. In connection with the Association’s highway scheme appreciation was expressed of the support of the l uth Island Motor Union, and the secretary was instructed to write conveying the committee’s appreciation. The secretary was also instructed to write thanking the South Canterbury Automobile Association for supporting the Businessmen’s scheme at the recent conference of the South Island Motor Union at Oamaru. Mr C. J. Talbot, a member of the Main Highways Board, wrote acknowledging receipt of the census of traffic
on the Main North Highway taken by the Association. Appreciation was expressed at the support the Association’s scheme was receiving, and the committee determined to continue its representations until a satisfactory issue was reached. PERSONAL Mrs F. Gaby has returned from a holiday in Invercargill. “BOMBAY MAIL” Edmund Lowe plays the leading role in “Bombay Mail,” an exciting mystery drama, which will head the programme at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre at 8 o’clock to-morrow evening. Variety supporting features will also be screened. Procters, the Premier Opticians. Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Geraldine, on Wednesday, 15th May, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel, on that date.
