Y.M.C.A. ACTIVITIES
VISIT OF RALPH CONNOR A special meeting of the Board of Directors of the Timaru branch of the Y.M.C.A. was held last evening, Mr W. G. Irwin, president of the Association, being in the chair. Correspondence was received from the national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. advising the Timaru Association that Dr. Charles W. Gordon, D.D., LL.D., F.R.S. (Ralph Connor), would be available to speak in Timaru on Wednesday, April 10. It was decided to take advantage of this offer, and arrangements were discussed for his reception. It was decided to invite the Mayor to take the chair at the public meeting, and to engage the Theatre Royal for the occasion. The general secretary (Mr F. E. S. Long) reported that the Association’s activities were commencing next week for the winter season. New equipment was needed for the gymnasium, and the physical director with his senior leaders were organising several efforts to raise the necessary finance. This action was commended by the directors. The vocational guidance department was having a busy time, 75 boys having registered as unemployed during February and March. Ten permanent positions and 80 temporary position had been found for boys during that time.
