SALARY CUTS RESTORED

PLANNED BY STATE CABINET

MOVE CRITICISED BY LABOUR United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 1, 7.0 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 1. The Premier (Mr B. S. B. Stevens) announced that it had been decided to restore a further 20 per cent of the amount by which the public service salaries had been reduced. The restoration applies to all branches of the Public Service not covered by the recent decision to remove all cuts in respect of married men receiving under £3OO a year. Introducing a Bill giving effect to the salary increases Mr Stevens said the total remissions and concessions made by the Government to the public servants, represented about £1,250,000 annually. The Government intended to continue the policy of granting further remissions, as the position of the finances permitted. Mr Baddeley said the Government had been forced into making remissions by protest meetings and the pleas of members that Cabinet should do something to “help them in the constituencies.” The Bill was read a first time.
