SHERWOOD DOWNS
At the annual meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute there was a large attendance of members and friends from Fairlie, Allandale and Ashwick Flat. Mrs Alister Mackenzie, who presided, welcomed visitors from Dunedin and Timaru.
Members decided to enter a table for Mr Burnett’s competition at the Mackenzie Show.
A most interesting letter was read from the Barton Segrave link in England.
Misses 3, Shaw and E. Cuthbertson were elected members.
Mrs Mackenzie announced that a vase had been presented to the Institute to be held each month by the winner of the specimen bloom competition.
The annual report and balancesheet were read and adopted, a satisfactory balance being in hand. The president expressed thanks to the committee for its loyal support, which had made the year’s work so successful and enjoyable. She then presented bouquets to Mrs Reid (vicepresident) , Mrs Carter (secretary), Mrs Harper (treasurer) and to Mrs A. P. Bray and Miss Cooper for special help. Mrs Mackenzie was re-elected president and Mrs Lundie, on behalf of members, presented her with a bouquet, and expressed grateful appreciation of her leadership and untiring work for the Institute.
The new committee was announced as follows: Mesdames Reid, Harper, Ross, A. P. Bray, Robertson, Ibbetson and Misses Cooper, Laird and Bray. The programme was then continued by the junior members, presided over by Miss A. Scott. Miss Cooper demonstrated the preserving of autumn leaves by different methods. An interesting competition, “Knights of Empire,” was won by Mrs A. Rayne. A one-act play was then staged. Miss Cooper was the producer and the parts were taken by Mesdames Anniss, MacBeth, A. P. Bray and the Misses A. Scott, J. Laird and E. Bray.
Competitions resulted: Specimen bloom, Mrs A. Mackenzie 1, Mrs Anniss 2, Mrs Lundie 3. Bottled fruit, Mrs Robertson 1, Mrs Cuthbertson and Mrs Anniss equal 2, Mrs Mackenzie 4. Mesdames Wareing and Patton (bloom), Mrs Hammond and Miss Foden (fruit) acted as judges. Mrs Wareing (president of the Allandale Institute), on behalf of the visitors, thanked the members for an enjoyable afternoon. WILLOWBRIDGE At the monthly meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute, Mrs G. Curtis presided. Mrs Curtis gave a demonstration of “Weavella,” the new wool work. The results of the competitions were —Scones (girdle), Mrs J. Forsyth 1, Miss A. Faulkner 2, Miss Richmond 3. Specimen bloom, Miss Faulkner 1, Miss Richmond 2, Mrs Forsyth 3. Article made from sugar bag, Mrs Forsyth 1 and 2, Miss Richmond 3. Knitted garment, Mrs Forsyth 1 and 3, Mrs Curtis 2. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mrs and Miss Faulkner and Mrs Forsyth.
