GARDEN PARTY

Y.W.C.A. FUNCTION Staged in the beautiful grounds of Mr B. E. H. Tripp, “Orielton,” Glen-iti, the garden party held under the auspices of the Timaru Young Women’s Christian Association on Saturday was an outstanding success. The generosity of Mr Tripp made it possible for the function to be held in surroundings which it would be difficult to surpass, the general lay-out of the grounds and the beauty of the flower plots attracting much attention and admiration.

The Board of Directors, headed by the president (Mrs T. E. Holdgate) and the secretary (Miss K. LovellSmith), had left no stone unturned to make the arrangements as complete as possible, and the afternoon’s programme was carried out without a hitch. The Association were favoured with ideal weather, and this ensured a goodly measure of public patronage. Stalls were arranged at several points in the ground, and throughout the afternoon the assistants were kept fairly busy. The value of the work which the Association is doing in the community has wide public recognition, and to this may be attributed the response of the public on Saturday. As a result of the function, the funds of the Association should materially benefit.

The stall-holders were:—Afternoon tea, Mesdames F. Lewis, M. A. Raymond, F. I. Washbourn, J. A. Norrie and Miss Hassell; cake and apron, Mrs Turnbull and Miss Mills; sweets, Mrs R. E. Ayres, Misses R. Holdgate and H. Reid; putting, Mrs W. W. Garton; “Aunt Sally” croquet, Mrs D. McLennan; bran dip, Messrs D. Norrie, L. Holdgate and D. Henshaw. During the afternoon an attractive ballet number was danced by Misses Ngaire Hogg, Dora Shirtcliff. Margaret Andrews, Shirley Lamb. Marion Wotherspoon and Doris Patchett. The four top ranked players in South Canterbury, W. G. Robertson, W. E. Renton, G. C. Reid and A. Sandral played exhibition matches on the grass court during the afternoon, their games being followed with interest by a fair sized gallery. A well varied program. . 0 of music was provided by the Junior Municipal Band, under the baton of Lieutenant W. H. Osborne.
