BRITAIN’S TRADE

TARIFF AS BARGAINING WEAPON British Official Wireless (Received March 24, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, March 23. In a speech at the annual dinner of the Iron and Steel Federation, the Prince of Wales expressed the belief that in conjunction with the Government, he might, during some of his travels have been a little instrumental in obtaining a few contracts. He expected that following the announcement of an increased rate of duties, in some instances of 50 per cent, on various elementary iron and steel products, British industry will have an effective bargaining power in negotiations with an International Cartel. It is understood that the Government approve of the efforts being made to come to terms with the Continental manufacturers. A statement issued by the Council of the British Iron and Steel Federation, welcomes the announcement of the Import Duties Advisory Committee, and adds that the measures proposed will create conditions within which the internal organisation of industry can be carried a further stage towards completion, and will also provide the basis for effective negotiations with an International Steel Cartel.
