GOLF

HIGHFIELD OPENS SEASON GOOD CARDS RETURNED The first of the local golf clubs officially to open the 1935 season was the Highfield Club, the members of which were favoured with ideal weather conditions for the function on Saturday afternoon. The links were in particularly good order, and surprisingly good form was shown for opening day. Mrs Kingston and Kingston returned a gross of 85, but their handicap gave them a net score of 68. Mrs Skinner and Lynch finished with the same net score, but they had a handicap of 19. Miss O’Callaghan and Gamble finished with a net 69, while Mrs Hawkes and E. A. Scott provided the best round of the afternoon, returning a gross 76. Their net score was 70. The next best gross score was that of Miss Pringle and Mackey, 80. President’s Welcome The president of the club, Mr W. H. Walton, in officially opening the season, extended a welcome to visitors, stating that owing to the generosity of Mrs Bowe, the donor of the trophy, the competition had been made open to members of all affiliated clubs, many representatives of which were present. He made mention of the remarkable scores sent in by many players, the standard being up to that of many end of season games, which indicated that the season should be an excellent one so far as golf was concerned. This no doubt was due to the summer golf, a great deal of which had been played. The course was in excellent condition, also due to the fact that golf had been played throughout the summer, for which the links had been maintained. In conclusion he welcomed all new members, stating that he hoped the older members would assist them, and wished all a pleasant and happy season. Scores were:— Gross Hep.
