PRICES OF CHEESE

LITTLE VARIATION Supplies of cheese imported into Britain have shown surprisingly little variation during recent years. New Zealand is sending more and Panada less. Australia is not yet an important competitor, and smaller foreign supplies from the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland were imported in 1933. Farmers will have noted a clause in the new agreement between the Milk Board and the creamery proprietors allowing for revision of the price to be paid for cheese milk from April onwards. The standing arrangement is that the monthly price shall be determined by the average price of the finest white New Zealand and the finest white Canadian cheese, with a deduction of 13d per lb to cover costs of manufacture, says “The Field.”

The creamery proprietors claim that a straight average under this agreement operates unfairly to them in the early summer, when actually there is very little Canadian cheese on the market, and the limited supplies of matured Canadian cheese make high prices and raise the average price unduly.

* This survey shows that the price margin of Canadian cheese over New Zealand was more marked in 1933 than in 1932. In May finest white Canadian made 70s per cwt, whereas finest white New Zealand realised 47s per cwt. It is on this score that the creamery proprietors will ask tfr an adjustment of the cheese milk price when next April comes.
