FRESIAN HERDS

SOME GREAT YIELDS South Canterbury—Mr G. G. Mcßae of Waimate reported in December that his Friesian herd of 12 cows had been averaging 51.2 lb milk daily for quite a long time. The herd includes one first-calver, two second-calvers, and three grade cows, one of which is a three teater. Mr Mcßae has a particularly well bred, high producing herd of Friesians and to him goes the credit of having bred Hiwiroa Avon King Sylvia, the sire of the “wonder” heifer, Moneville Sylvia Posch Mercena t M.S. Rennie) who produced 764.09 lb. fat as a senior 2-year-old heifer last season and 126.61 lb fat in August, 106.90 lb fat in September and 95.55 lb fat in October, as a senior 3-year-old this season. The August return of this heifer is the highest monthly return for New Zealand for any cow tested under mature age. North Canterbury—Mr H. J. Macartney’s Friesian herd of 37 cows at Tai Tapu produced 370,088 lb milk and 14,157 lb fat, an average of 10,002 lb milk and 382.6 lb fat per cow, in 281 days last season under the Canterbury Herd Testing Association. The average test for the season was 3.8 % and the highest month was October, 1933, when the herd averaged 57.5 lb fat. An 8-year-old cow produced 560 lb fat in 299 days and a 6-year-old, 512 lb fat in 285 days while 16 other cows produced over 400 lb fat. Mr Macartney’s last selection for a herd sire was Lenslea Echo Paul Pietertje (Pareora Burkeyje Hero—Colinton Vida), a bull bred by L. H. Leslie and whose sire’s dam has two records over 600 lb fat, while his own dam produced 640 lb, fat as a four-year-old on C.O.R. test, and 540 lb fat in 305 days as a 10-year-old cow on G.O.H.T. Central Otago—Bellfield Lady Roberts, a two-year-old heifer bred and owned by D. D. F. Maclean of Omakau, is doing well under Group Herd Test this season, producing 491 b fat in November, 51 lb in December and 52 lb in January. These figures have been made during the driest season experienced for some years in Central Otago. Mr Maclean’s heifer is a daughter of Gleniffer Pauline Pontiac 2nd (Bainfield King Dell—Gleniffer Pauline Pontiac), threS times champion cow at the Central Otago Show, while her sire is Rosevale Korndyke Posch Midget (Count Korndyke Roberts Posch—Rosevale Jessica Sylvia, 7131 b fat). "Longbeach Cows Average 7001 b Fat By finishing her 365 days on C.O.R. test in December with a yield of 708.71 lb fat, the pedigree Friesian cow, Longbeach Transvaal Queen 4th becomes the third Friesian cow bred by J. H. Grigg on “Longbeach” Station to exceed the 7001 b mark during 1934. All told, four Friesian cows in the Longbeach herd completed records under C.O.R-. test during 1934, the average production of the quartet being 17,721.51 b milk and 698.491 b. fat with an average test of 3.94 %. The individual records, which are the first to be made under official test at Longbeach for over eight years, are as follows : lb Milk lb Fat Longbeach Everlasting 2nd, Byrs. 18dys. . .. 19,409.0 758.02 Longbeach Transvaal Star 4th, Byrs. 122dys. 18,108.1 723.67 Longbeach Transvaal Queen 4th, 7yrs. 120dys. 19,012.8 708.71 Longbeach Transvaal Star 14th, 3yrs. 295dys. 14,356.1 603.55 Such consistently high records are a great advertisement for the Dutch strain of Black and Whites and the increasing demand for these big, strong constitutioned, dark coloured, heavy producing, high testing pedigree Friesians is easily understood. “Rosevale” Sixteenth 800 lb Record The sixteenth 8001 b butterfat record to be made in the “Rosevale” Friesian herd owned by Messrs. H. North and Sons at Omimi, Otago, was that pedigree Friesian cow Rosevale Catrina Griselda Posch. The monthly returns of this high producer were:—

This record is the third made by Rosevale Catrina Griselda Posch under C.O.R. test, her previous returns being 508.541 b fat as a junr. 2-year-old and 711.531 b fat as a junior four-year-old. Rosevale Catrina Griselda Posch is the third daughter of the imported bull. Echo Sylvia Sir Griselda, to produce over 8001 b fat and the third daughter of Rosevale Catrina Posch (Rosevale Korndvke Sylvia Posch —Rosevale Col-

antha) to produce over 7001 b fat. Rosevale Catrina Griselda Posch is a full sister of Rosevale Catrina Posch Echo, holder of five C.O.R. averaging 7131 b fat and the dam of Rosevale Champion Pose** Echo, the present senior herd sire at “Rosevale.”
