Sir Charles and Lady Heaton-Ellis, of England, are on a holiday visit to New Zealand.
Messrs J. H. Pauling (Nelson), H. D. Smith and C. A. Sarginson (Christchurch) are guests at the Dominion. Mr A. Bonville-Were, of Melbourne, chairman of directors of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, who has been visiting the Dominion, left yesterday on his return to Australia. Messrs E. R. Norman, L. G. Moss, G. Stewart, H. Burke (Wellington), J. A. Reeve (Auckland), and A. Paterson (Dunedin) are staying at the Grosvenor.
A Press Association message from Christchurch says that the resignation of Mr W. C. Colee, headmaster of the Normal School for ten years, was accepted with regret by the Canterbury Education Board to-day. Mr G. J. Shackleton was reappointed the Canterbury Education Board’s representative on the Waimate High School Board of Governors for a term of two years at the monthly meeting of the hoard yesterday.
At the conclusion of the business of the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday night the town clerk, Mr Dudley Bockett, was presented with a chiming clock in honour of his approaching marriage. After having held the office of district Coroner for 30 years and Justice of the Peace for 38 years, Mr Alfred Fraser, of Foxton, has forwarded his resignation to the department. A letter received by him in reply, conveys the thanks of the Government for the long term of public service he has rendered.
Mr C. C. G. Webb, who has been awarded a University senior scholarship in Architecture, is a son of Mrs H. H. Webb, of Timaru. Mr Webb was educated at the preparatory department of Timaru Boys’ High School, of which he was dux, and completed his secondary education at Christ’s College. He is now studying at Auckland University. The election of Mr W. H. Nicholson as president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association was announced at the annual meeting of the association this week. Mr Nicholson succeeds Mr Gordon Fulton. Mr E. J. Bell, librarian of the Canterbury Public Library, will arrive in Timaru on Monday to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Libraries’ Association, of which he is secretary.
A hearty welcome was extended to Senior-Sergeant D. J. Hewitt, by Mr A. L. Gee, on behalf of the Justices of the Peace Association, at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. He hoped the Senior-Sergeant would have a pleasant stay in Timaru. In the past, the relations between the Justices of the Peace and the Police had been most cordial. Senior-Sergeant Hewitt replied briefly, stating that he would do nothing to alter the good feeling that existed.
