OAMARU AUTUMN MEETING GUARANTEE WINS CHIEF EVENT The Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opened yesterday in cold an l overcast weather, but the track was dry and fast. The attendance was only an average one, and speculation was not animated, the turnover for the day, £6567/10/-, failing to show the expected increase on last year’s figures, £7406/10/-. The racing was good, some close finishes being provided, and in most cases the fields were large. The two main events went to representatives of D. P. Wilson’s stable, Guarantee and Trivet, the winner being coupled with a team-mate in each case. Times were uniformly fast, the only exception being in the Weston Trot in which Dillon Queen slowed up the field. L. J. Ellis rode two winners, and is now three points ahead of W. J. Broughton, who temporarily headed him last week. Following are details of the racing: TRIAL STAKES Of 75 sovs; 5 furlongs. 1— M, M. Friedlander’s ch f Convivial, 3yrs, Lord Warden— Jazz Girl, 8.8 (L. REVIEW OF THE RACING Tight finish in Trial. Scratchings reduced the field in the Trial Stakes to 23, but even that number made backers shy of investing, and the pool was a small one. The popular selections were Convivial 240, McHeath 137 and Rose of Tralee 118. Joyous (carrying 71b overweight) was first to draw clear from Pompeii, McHeath, Jack Ahoy and Convivial. Joyous led McHeath and Perfect Rose to the straight, and a furlong from home Joyous and McHeath were well clear, but Convivial then joined in, and in • a great finish the favourite got through in the middle to win by a nose from McHeath, who was only a nose in front of Joyous. Merry del Val and Perfect Rose were together, a couple of lengths away, with a long gap to the next bunch. L. J. Ellis’s vigorous finish was largely responsible for Convivial’s success, as she had a good deal of ground to make up in the straight. Grecian Prince in the Mood. For the Autumn Highweight, Hunting Go 382, Heather Glow 24(3, Jolly Beggar 173 and Courtyard 157 elicited most support. Hystride was first to show, but was immediately headed by Lady Zephyr. Then Grecian Prince, who had started from the outside a couple of lengths behind the field, took charge from Lady Zephyr. Song Boy and Night Recital, and the Orari-owned gelding ran to the far turn three lengths ahead of Song Boy and Night Recital, with Hunting Go, Heather Glow and Courtyard next. Grecian Prince, Night Recital, Song Boy, Hunting Go and Heather Glow was the order coming to the home turn, and Grecian Prince stayed on to win by two lengths from Courtyard, who got up to beat Hunting Go by a head. Jolly Beggar, Heather Glow and Black Duke were together, two or three lengths away, well clear of Night Recital and Dressy. A Win to Point. The Point mare Dillon Queen 419 was made a hot favourite for the Weston Trot, from Grand Mogul 220, Casino 192 and Self 168. Parishioner, Smithy and Parachute all broke at the start. Dillon Queen was first away from Casino and Self, and passing the stand the favourite was leading from Master Garry, Self, Casino, Colleen Chenault and Blue Spark. Blue Spark broke and dropped out at the back, where the order was Dillon Queen, Colleen Chenault, Self, Master Garry. Shandon Chimes, Casina and Beverley King. Trinidad made a move at the top but could not maintain his run. Dillon Queen led into the home stretch from Master Garry,. Self and Casino, and a furlong from home looked an easy winner. Casino then came with a strong run and almost overhauled the leader, but Dillon Queen responded and won by a length and a half. Casino was three lengths in advance of Wee Wrack, who finished very fast and beat Self by a head for third. Then came Grand Mogul, Sea Peter and Master Garry together. Guarantee's Good Finish. Kemal Pasha and Hunting Go dropped out of the President’s Handicap, leaving a one-dividend field of six runners (Guarantee and Cleaner being bracketed). Silver Streak 388. Folydora 309, and the bracket 270 carried most money. Sam Smith was first to show, but Silver Streak went to the front entering the back and led along the stretch three lengths ahead of Sam Smith, who was two lengths in front of Manetho and Guarantee. There was no change at the top, but turning for home Manetho ran into second place ahead of Sam Smith. A furlong from home Silver Streak held such an advantage that it seemed impossible to catch him, but Guarantee put in a great dash and when he ran up to Silver Streak, the favourite had nothing in reserve, Guarantee winning decisively by a neck. Manetho was about three lengths back, a neck in front of Sam Smith, with Polydora last, a position she held all the way.

Odds-On Winner. Capital 550 was installed a hot favourite for the Windsor Handidkp, a long way ahead of Secret Paper 266 and Unseen 185. Brown Pearl was first away and led along the back from Silver Lark and Bowlands. At the home turn Silver Lark and Silk Paper were in charge from Brown Pearl, who was leading a bunch. In the straight Capital came from the ruck, and catching Silk Paper half a furlong from home went on to win by two lengths. Bowlands, who lost his early position, finished well wide out and was placed fourth, just ahead of Daring Deed and Pala Melba. Capital is usually seen to best advantage when he begins well, but he finished very resolutely yesterday and is evidently becoming more solid with age. Three-in-Line Finish. Kemal Pasha, Cherry Queen, Lochlaggan and Fair Weather retired from the Stewards’ Handicap, reducing the strength of the field, and backers were divided between Rebel Star 484 and the Trivet-Assemble combination 463. There was considerable delay at the start, mainly caused by Hula Belle, and when they were sent away Hula Belle and Grecian Prince were last to leave. Rebel Star was soon out in front from Enwood and Meadow Lark, and turning for home Rebel Star was carrying on from Enwood and Quietly, with Trivet emerging from the next bunch. Half way up the straight Rebel Star and Enwood were challenged by Trivet, and the three engaged in a desperate finish, the verdict going by half a head to Trivet, with Enwood a head in front of Rebel Star. Grecian Prince was about two lengths away, followed by Quietly and Hula Belle. Trivet has been racing very consistently lately, and she has a good record on the Oamaru course. Successful Combination. In the Redcastle Trot, backers displayed a pronounced preference for Rongomai 450 and Cam Dillon 331, the next in demand being Royal Travis 247 and Harold Wrack 205. Garry Thorpe, Cam Dillon, Captain Heath and Starvale all were delayed at the start. Silk Cord, Gyrate and Royal Travis were quickest away, and into the back Silk Cord was leading from Royal Travis and Harold Wrack. Then Harold Wrack dashed to the front and led to the far turn from Silk Cord and Royal Travis. Rounding the top Rongomai moved up, and the order into the straight Was Harold Wrack, Silk Cord, Rongomai and Royal Travis. In the run home Rongomai had too much pace for the others and won by a good length from Silk Cord, Who beat Summit by a length and a half. Royal Travis was fourth, then came Gyrate and Harold Wrack. Summit was well back at the home turn and finished fastest of the field. Rongomai, a speedy three-year-old filly, credited another success to the Barton-Duhlevey-Fraser combination, and increased J. Fraser’s lead in the winning reinsmen’s list. Haere Tonu Again. When Palatinate and Queen of Song were taken out of the Parkside Handicap, the field was reduced to six, of which three appeared to have negligible chances, and backers wisely confined their attention to Tuirau 898, Haere Tonu 550 and Dodge 407., Tuirau and Dodge were quickest to move, but Dodge soon took charge from Tuirau

and Haere Tonu. Racing to the home turn the leaders were Dodge, Haere Tonu and Water Polo. Tuirau was disappointed in trying for an opening on the rails and had to be pulled out. Haere Tonu tackled Dodge in the last furlong, and beat him, possibly with a little in reserve, by a long neck, Tuirau who came again on the outside, being a length and a half away. Water Polo was a moderate fourth. Haere Tonu was a winner at Trentham last week, and this was his third success within a few weeks in the hands of D. O’Connor. Tuirau appeared to be rather unlucky.
