TOWN AND COUNTRY ITEMS OAMARU, March 21. Personal: At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Sheep Breeders’ Association in Christchurch, Messrs T. S. Little (Corriedale) and H. J. Andrew (Maheno) were elected members of the council. Mr T. S. Little was the winner of one of the 20 silver shields offered for the best two-shear ram and one-shear ewe in the various breeds, to be the property of breeders whose flocks are registered in the New Zealand Flock Book, his success having been gained at the Dunedin Show with a Border Leicester ewe. There was no award for the ram owing to insufficient entries. Remanded to Dunedin: A wayfarer, James David O’Connor, was charged yesterday afternoon before Mr Bundle, S.M., with being an idle and disorderly person and having insufficient means of support. He was remanded to appear at Dunedin tomorrow morning for sentence. Presentation: A large and representative gathering of the Oamaru Borough Council’s outside staff paid a visit to the residence of Mr and Mrs D. M. Kennedy, in Humber Street, on the occasion of his retirement from the staff. Mr Tiffany, the spokesman, in an appropriate speech, spoke of the many good qualities of their friends, and also eulogised the kindness of Mrs Kennedy. He asked Mr Kennedy to accept as a present from the staff a silver-mounted engraved walking-stick and a parcel of tobacco, and also presented to Mrs Kennedy a handbag. After several of the other visitors had spoken, Mr Kennedy replied on behalf of his wife and himself, thanking the staff for their valuable presents. Representative Cricket Oamaru senior matches that were to have been concluded on Saturday have been postponed in view of a representative match arranged to be played at Timaru. The North Otago team is Blair, Calder, Capstick, Davey, Firth, Maddigan, MeCallum, McDonald, Taylor, Uttley, Zimmerman; emergencies, Tonkin and Hendra. Brooker was not available.
Theft Charge: At two o’clock this morning in Tyne Street, Constable Miller arrested a man, John Joseph Grace, a stranger to, the town, carrying half a sack, of coal, and this morning Grace appeared before Messrs McDiarmid and Crombie, J.P.’s, charged with theft. He was convicted and discharged and ordered to leave the town.
Increased Building: At the present time there is evidence of increased building activity both in the town and country. Last week three contracts were let, two being in the country and one in the town. The country contracts included one for additions and alterations to a residence (valued at about £1800), and the other for an outbuilding (valued at about £670), while a town contract was for a residence valued at £950. In the town also four residences, or bungalows, have recently been completed, the approximate values being £650, £750, £BSO and £1450, and two other houses valued at £7OO and £IOOO are in the course of construction. While the houses mentioned do not represent all the building operations going on they provide some indication of the increase in building activity.
