A motion of condolence with Mr F. J. Cook in the death of his father was passed by the Council of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night.
Messrs L. Arnott ((Wellington), T. W. Vickery, W. Lewis (Christchurch). W. D. Cogan, P. Caley (Dunedin) and G. F. Dawson (Oamaru) are guests at the Grosvenor.
The Mayor Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, Cr. G. Benstead. and the Town Clerk, Mr E. A. Killick, left yesterday to attend the annual conference of the Municipal Association in Christchurch.
Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan will leave Tirnaru on Tuesday en route for Wellington, where he will join the Tamaroa, which is due to sail for England via Panama* on the following Friday. He expects to reach England on May 1.
Included in the guests registered at the Empire are Messrs H. MacDougall (Riverton), W. J. Ross (Wellington), J. Murphy. F. A. Williams, J. H. Wilson (Christchurch), C. Parnell (Dunedin), J. R. Donovan and F. B. Gray (Masterton). The manager of the Frankton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, Mr W. D. Ross, will retire at the end of this month, after 47 years’ service. Mr Ross joined the bank at Christchurch. He will be succeeded by Mr R. H. Smith, of Christchurch. In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes moved a motion placing on record recognition of the high services rendered to New Zealand by Mr J. R. Corrigan, a former member of the House, and tendering sympathy to the widow. The motion was carried and the House adjourned till 7.30 p.m. as a mark of respect. At a meeting of shareholders of Messrs A. J. Entrican, Sims and Co., Ltd., Auckland, Mr A. G. Maughan, who has been secretary of the company since its inception, was presented with a gold watch suitably inscribed, and a cheque. He has held the position of accountant and secretary since 1891. The chairman conveyed to Mr Maughan deep regret that the state of his health necessitated his retirement. Members of the Highfield Tennis Club met to bid farewell to their president, Mr Robert Wilson, on the eve of his departure on a visit to England. Mr J. Russell, club captain, spoke of the excellent qualities of the president, and stated how the members would miss him while he was on holiday. He also wished Mr and Mrs Wilson the happiest of holidays. On behalf of members he presented the president with a solid silver cigarette case.
