BARTER CONTRACTS
REPORT REGARDING GERMANY AND NEW ZEALAND
By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 14
Interviewed regarding the statement of the Leipzig correspondent of “The Financial Times” that barter contracts with Australia and New Zealand among other countries had been a feature of the Leipzig Fair, the German Consul (Mr W. Penseler) said to-day that anything of that kind had been left entirely to private enterprise and as yet there had been no arrangement between the governments of these countries, although Germany had barter agreements with a number of other nations. Australia and New Zealand, however, were too remote and this factor rendered barter negotiations extremely involved.
Officials of the Department of Industry and Commerce confirmed this statement and explained that, while the German policy was to make barter a featm? of her external trade to as great a degree as possible, this could not always be effected.
A cable message published on Wednesday stated that the Leipzig correspondent of the “Financial Times” reported that barter contracts with Australia, New Zealand, China, Egypt and other raw material countries had been a feature of the Fair for which a special office had been established.
