MAJESTIC THEATRE PAUL CAVANAGH IN “MENACE” One of the most exciting pictures which has been screened in Timaru for a long time, “Menace,” featuring Paul Cavanagh and Gertrude Michael will conclude at the Majestic Theatre today. The film is full of mystery and thrills, and retains the interest throughout. “Hide-Out" To-morrow “Hide-Out,” the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture which will open tomorrow, is heralded as one of those wholesome film productions which leave a lasting impression upon those who see it. It deals with a happy-go-lucky post-repeal racketeer who, believing he has everything one could wish for in life—money, without working for it, romance and pleasure — comes to his senses after he has been driven from New York by the police, only to find a real love and happiness in a rural environment. The picture is said to be crammed with all of the excitement and glamour of Big Town life and the purity and simple existence of a rural community. As “Lucky” Wilson, the playboy, Robert Montgomery has a made-to-order role. Reluctantly he is compelled to find a country hide-out to escape arrest and to recover from a bullet wound, but he soon becomes entranced with the country when he meets Maureen O’Sullivan, cast in the role of a farmer’s daughter. Prominently cast in “HideOut” is Edward Arnold, who will be remembered for his recent outstanding portrayal in “Sadie McKee," in which he played Joan Crawford’s philandering husband. REGENT THEATRE “THE CASE OF THE HOWLING DOG” Perry Mason, styled the new king of crime hunters, is introduced in “The Case of the Howling Dog,” which will conclude at the Regent to-day. Warren William and Mary Astor are featured in a picture which pi’esents something new in mystery drama. The featured players give splendid characterisations, and they are ably supported by those in minor roles, “Trans-Atlantic Merry-Go-Round.” A note of freshness and vitality -is struck in the lavish musical comedy “Trans - Atlantic Merry-go-Round,” which will commence a season at the Regent Theatre to-morrow. The film is a remarkable mixture of comedy, romance, mystery, music and spectacular scenes, and in structure follows the model established by “Grand Hotel,” as it deals with the lives of a collection of people on board a palatial liner. However, the characters are not thrown together in a haphazard manner, for their affairs are linked from the outset and instead of a network of diversified and unrelated stories there is a coherent and brilliantly-conceived plot. A talented cast is comprised of several well-known stage and screen players and is headed by the charming Nancy Carroll, who gives an hilarious impersonation of Greta Garbo, while Mitzi Green is seen as George Arliss. Gens Raymond gives an engaging portrayal of a carefree criminal. An excellent performance is contributed by Sydney Howard, who is appearing in his first American film. He still has his morose appearance and mournful voice. Other prominent artists are Jack Benny, Sidney Blackmer, Ralph Morgan, William Boyd and the Boswell sisters.
