OAMARU J.C

ACCEPTANCES By Telegraph—Press Association OAMARU. March 14. Acceptances for the first day (March 21) of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting are: 12.30 p.m.— TRIAL STAKES. Of 75 sovs; 5 furlongs.

RETURNING HOME

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 14, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 14. Mr D. W. Westenra, owner of Vintage, is returning by the Maunganui to-day. Vintage is returning direct from Melbourne.

Sylvandale’s Sydney Cup weight (8.12) is a big load for a three-year-old, but Wallace won with it at that age, and Carbine (sire of Wallace) put up a three-year-old record for the race by winning under 9.0.

Nightly ran six furlongs at Riccarton yesterday morning in 1.14 2-5 on the plough, a very satisfactory Thompson Handicap trial.

Margaret Bell, who won the Wyndham Handicap on Wednesday, is trained at Winton by T. Wallis, well known at Washdyke. She was considered badly, treated through Kibo, and returned a double-figure dividend on the win machine.

Mr W. E. Hazlett recently took over the big Cynic gelding Graball, who is to run in the Clifden Steeplechase tomorrow. Graball was in E. J. Ellis’s stable some years ago, and looked the part of a ’chaser, but his racing career has been a disappointing one. “Getting away from standard -weight-for-age is not the only change in recent years in Australian weight-for-age racing. There has been a marked tendency to decrease distances (says an Australian paper). The King’s Plate replaced in 1916 one of the historic events of the Australian turf. This was the Champion Stakes, an event two years older than the Melboune Cup and one which for many years took precedence of that event in official Australian records of the principal races. It was run over three miles at standard weight-for-age. The names of many great horses appear in its list of winners. The Barb, First King, Zoe, Strop, Grand Flaneur, Commotion, Carbine, Abercorn, Newhaven, Portsea, La Carabine, Wakeful, Emir, Dividend, Prince Foote, Trafalgar, Quiver, and Wallace—the last two a dead heatare some of them. The last Champion Stakes, run in 1915, was won by that high-class New Zealand-bred mare Carlita. The V.R.C. came to the conclusion that the title Champion Stakes had become a misnomer, and in 1916 it substituted the King’s Plate, out retained the distance at three miles, and Carlita again won from another New Zealander, Cherubini. In 1917 the distance was shortened to two miles, and in 1931 it became a mile and a half. Phar Lap won the last two-mile King’s Plate and the first at the shorter distance.” Distance alone is not a test of stamina. The old-time three-milers were usually crawls, and often did not afford as stiff a test as a fast run mile and a half.
