The Thorshavn made a two hours’ call to land the whaleman who was struck by the immense flange of a whale, breaking both his legs. The captain said the coastline Of the new land was over 300 miles. The discovery was made possible by the disappearance of the pack ice. The land is barren and dry, partly ice covered. The only life were flocks of penguins. The Thorshavn is carrying 60,000 barrels of oil worth £150,000. Discovery IX. returned after an eight months' oceanographic survey, including the South Shetlands, and the Palmer Archipelago.
