A NEW CARDINAL?
DR. BOURNE’S SEE LONDON, January 19. Within the next few days an .envoy will leave England for the Vatican carrying with him a secret document detailing the names of nominees to succeed the late Cardinal Bourne as Archbishop of Westminster. This document will be placed before the Pope, who will at a later and unspecified date make known his selection. Roman Catholics in this country hope that when the selection is made it will be followed by an announcement of a new cardinal for Britain. Such an announcement is unlikely to be made for a considerable time, but, having regard to precedent—the last four archbishops of Westminster have been cardinals—and the increasing importance of Britain in the Holy Roman Catholic Church, it is felt that the Pope will not unduly delay his order. Three Names Three names of possible successors to Cardinal Bourne’s See have already been chosen by the Chapter of Canons, who met last Monday under the presidency of Bishop Amigo, senior suffrsgan of the Westminster Province. During next week these names will be made known to a meeting of the bishops of the Suffragan Dioceses of Westminster. This meeting will be attended by the Bishops of Southwark, Brentwood, Portsmouth, Nottingham, and Northampton. A Separate Question
It is impossible to say when the Pope will make known the name of the selected new archbishop. That will depend entirely upon a number of factors which may have to be taken into account.
The possible creation of a cardinal is, of course, ~n entirely distinct question, but it is felt that as, with the death of Cardinal Bourne, Britain is left without a cardinal, the Pope will exercise his right as Supreme Head of the Church, to make a new appointment.
