TIMARU WOOL SALE

It was anticipated that at the second and final wool sale of the season in South Canterbury, the prices obtained at recent auctions in the Dominion would be fully maintained and for the most part this proved to be correct. The better class wools brought forth fairly keen competition, and were disposed of at prices which were on a par with the rates ruling in Dunedin on Saturday, but inferior wools were a shade easier. The cause of this decline was stated to be due to the fact that a great number of the clips were discoloured. During the spring a fair amount of rain fell, but there followed a long period of dry weather, with extremely hot temperatures, causing a good deal of sweating. The result was discolouration of the wool, a factor which operated against its disposal at what might have been regarded as satisfactory prices. Actually a good deal of the wool offered yesterday was yellow in colour and was a shade coarser than usual, and buyers could'not do other than restrict their values. Merino Sought After The Merino wool which came forward was keenly sought after, and generally speaking these lines opened up in good condition. Some of it was regarded as being equal to anything that had been seen in South Canterbury, and this opinion was confirmed by the fact that the top price for the sale was 133 d, which was paid for 39 bales of super combing Merino from Grays Hills (Mr J. W. Grant, Mackenzie Country). This clip Was uniformly good, a second lot being disposed of at 133 d, and a third lot at 13d. This price was but id less than the top price for a line of Merino, sold on behalf of Mr J. Freeland, of Green Valley, at the Dunedin sale last week. Several other lines of Merino realised between lOd and 1/-. A goodly percentage of the catalogue -was made up of halfbred, and crosl-bred wools, and a majority of these clips changed hands. Back country cilps opened up reasonably well, but a certain heaviness was noticeable in some of the later shorn clips. South Canterbury this season was allocated only two sales, the first having been held in December. In previous years three auctions have been held in this centre, one in December, one in February, and a clearing up sale in April. With the elimination of the third' sale, the second one was put back a few weeks, but judging by the total offering yesterday, it would seem that a certain amount of wool left the district, as the catalogue was below the aggregate for the second and third sales of last season. Full Bench of Buyers The bench of buyers yesterday was a fully representative one, the bulk of the competition as usual coming from Bradford and the Continental representatives. The Japanese buyers came into the market whenever there were lots forward suitable to their requirements. The German representatives were also present, but they operated very sparingly. In the early part of the sale passings were fairly frequent, and at the finish the total passings were in the vicinity of 3000 bales. A fair percentage of this was disposed of by private treaty at the conclusion of the sale. The individual offerings in the order of selling are as under:— National Mortgage .. .. 6292 Pyne, Gould, Guinness .. 4066 N.Z. Loan Co. .. .. 906 C.F.C.A., Ltd 5486 Dalgety and Co 5408 22,158 The first catalogue offered was the largest of the five, and it was disposed of in an hour and 11 minutes, which was remarkably good selling. The second catalogue occupied 43 minutes; the third, 12 minutes; the fourth 44 minutes and the final catalogue 57 minutes, a total of three hours 48 minutes. The first catalogue was a very representative one, and for the most part it set a range for the sale, although in two instances improved prices were recorded in the second catalogue, and three in the last. Half-bred wool opened at round about 9d, but eventually lid, was recorded, this price being secured for lots offered on behalf of Squire Bros., Maungati, and Mr K. J. Mackenzie, Hinds. A little later a rise of a half-penny was noted, this figure being secured by Mr L. J. Grant, Clandeboye. A line of quarterbred wool sent forward on behalf of the estate of the late Mr Owen Blackler. Pleasant Point, was sold at 103 d. There was not a great deal of Corriedale wool offered during the morning, but most of that which came under the hammer was disposed of. The best of the early lots was a line offered on behalf of Mr S. F. Collier, Otaio Gorge, who received 103 d. Threequarterbred wool early reached 9d, this price being paid for a line offered on account of the estate of the late Mr D. T. Carter, Hanging Rock. As was previously mentioned, merino wool sold at 133 d, this figure being reached midway through the opening catalogue. Corriedales Improve The first lot offered in the second catalogue, eight bales of halfbred on account of Mr A. B. Ross, Burke’s Pass, realised the good price of lid, and super Merino ewe wool from Albury Park (Mr B. Shaw), was sold at 103 d. With the offering of a line of Corriedale ewe wool on behalf of Mr H. J. C. Harper, Waimate, the price for this class advanced to lid, competition being very keen. A little later the same price was secured on behalf of Mr G. A. Barclay, Waihaorunga. Halfbred ewe wool, auctioned on account of the estate of Mrs A. Mathieson, realised llld, a fraction short of the then top price. The top price for threequarterbred had remained at 9d, for some time, but an advance of a penny was noted with the disposal of a lme sent forward by Mr R. J- Love, Ruapuna. In the third catalogue, was received for a line of merino offered on

PRICES GENERALLY FIRM GOOD CLEARANCE EFFECTED The second and final wool sale of the season in South Canterbury was held in Timaru yesterday, when a catalogue of 22,158 bales was offered to a full bench of buyers. Compared with the recent auction in Dunedin, prices for the better class wools were firm, but discoloured and inferior lots brought irregular competition, find prices were inclined to be a shade easier than at Dunedin, the drop being about a farthing to a halfpenny. A fast rate of selling was maintained throughout, the main catalogue being disposed of in just under four hours, the average being 5500 bales an hour.

account of Mr T. Peach, Lake Pukaki, while lid was received for halfbred wool sent forward by Mr J. Fraser, Mackenzie Peaks. Good average prices were received in the fourth catalogue. Some good half bred clips were offered, the best prices realised being lid for a line auctioned on account of Mr A. P. Kelland, Albury, and another lot on behalf of Mr W. R. Grant, Ealing. A bin line also brought lid. Further Changes The concluding catalogue saw the range altered in three instances, the first improvement being the offering of a bin line of halfbred, which realised 123 d, this proving to be the top price for the sale. The next lot was auctioned for llld, which equalled the earlier top price. Halfbred necks also advanced to 93d, this price being secured for a line sold on account of Mr A. A. Taylor, Peel Forest. Threequarterbred wool offered on behalf of the estate of Mr R. A. Richards was sold at 93d, while halfbred wool from the Allandale Station (Mr Andrew Grant, Fairlie) sold at 12d. The same grower received lOd for his halfbred necks, which was the best price for necks for the sale. The only other increase in this catalogue was in crossbreds, 93d being received for a bin line. There was an unexpected incident towards the close of the sale. The “star” lots were under auction when the power supply failed, the theatre being thrown into darkness. One or two matches were struck, but the doors at the back of the stage were thrown open, and the business was concluded under difficulties. Some of the best prices were:— NATIONAL MORTGAGE.
