BRITISH AUTHOR IN TROUBLE

SENSATIONAL ARREST IN AMERICA

ACCUSED OF COMMUNIST VIEWS United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 13, 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 12. The Government has ordered the arrest of Evelyn John Strachey, the British author, claiming that he entered the United States by means of false and misleading statements. Since his arrival Strachey had declared himself to be a Communist. The Federal Bureau of Immigration announced that the circumstances it mentioned rendered Strachey mandatorily deportable under the immigration laws, but because of the prominence of Strachey, many observers here considered that the projected action might grow into an international incident. Colonel D. W. Mac Cormack (Immigration Commissioner) announced that a warrant had been issued and his Chicago agents planned to serve it on Strachey at Glencoe, where the author was scheduled to lecture. Later advice from Chicago states that Strachey had been arrested there.

STATEMENT BY STRACHEY DENIAL OF RED ACTIVITIES United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph—Copy right (Received March 13, 8.15 p.m.) CHICAGO, March 12. In a statment to the Associated Press, Strachey said: “The charge as read to me in the warrant is absurd. I am not a member of the Communist Party. Therefore I will firmly deny I entered the country through mis-statements. I have never advocated the overthrow of the United States Government by force or violence. I have never advocated anything. All the political talking I do. I do in my own country, Britain. Here the American citizens invite me to lecture on the politics and economics of the day from an informative standpoint, and not from that of political beliefs.” Conditional Release. A later message reported that Strachey had been released without a bond. He will appear before the immigration authorities on Wednesday.
