The task of the Mauretania will be to maintain Britain’s speed, reliability, and prestige until the Queen Mary is ready. The Mauretania was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne, and was launched in 1907. Of 30,696 tons gross, she was engaged on the service between Liverpool and New York, and held the speed record of the Atlantic for twenty-two years. Her fastest time for an Atlantic crossing was 4d 10hr 41min. This record, made in 1909, stood until 1929, when it was beaten by the German liner Bremen. It is now held by the Italian liner Rex.
