Mr J. Penman (Auckland) is staying at the Empire. Mr L. G. Lowry has been chosen as the official Labour candidate for the Otaki seat. Mr E. V. Archer (Vancouver) is visiting Timaru and is staying at the Grosvenor. Mr R. A. Wilkie, Otipua Road, left yesterday to connect with the Wanganella for Melbourne. Mr T. D. Urquhart, of Opotiki, has arrived in Timaru to take up the position of stock inspector, rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr W. Scott. Mr K. J. Caverhill, district public trustee and supervisor of the rural intermediate credits, of Masterton, has been appointed deputy superintendent of the State Advances Department. Guests at the Empire include Messrs H. Doak, R. G. Morris (Rakaia), A. J. Alexander, T. Glynn, L. Horgan, J. Kerrish, T. Hogan, R. McKay (Hawera).D. McKenzie (Masterton), N. McDonald (Mount Cook). Included in the guests at the Grosvenor are Messrs R. H. Algar (Dune- 1 din), C. J. Pugsley, C. E. Robertson, W. S. Glenn, H. D. Carson, E. T. Mandel (Wellington), P. M. Brooker (Christchurch) . Mr W. A. C. Smith, at present on the staff of Wellington College, has been appointed mathematics master at Nelson College. Mr Smith will fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Dr J. T. Campbell to the staff of Victoria University College. Dr H. Wilcox, who was ship’s surgeon in the new Tasmanian steamer Taroona, which arrived recently at Melbourne on her maiden v6yage from Great Britain, is on his way to his home in New Zealand for a short holiday. Dr Wilcox, who was a member of Byrd’s Antarctic Expedition in 1929-30, and was with Sir Wilfred Grenfell in Labrador, in 1931, has been engaged in postgraduate work in London. Opon his return to England he will enter the medical branch of the Royal Air Force.
