TRAINING CRUISE
AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, March 13. In the course of a leisurely training cruise. H.M.A.S. Canberra, the flagship of the Australian Squadron, and her sister cruiser. H.M.S. Sussex, arrived from Russell this morning. Three destroyers, in which the public are particularly interested, as they are believed to be the first British destroyers ever to visit Auckland, were delayed at Russell by heavy weather yesterday afternoon, and are not expected to make port till to-morrow. The cruisers had an uncomfortable run down, and it was considered that in the high seas running the destroyers would probably have suffered damage. The flag of Rear-Admiral Ford was accorded a salute from the Philomel at the naval base. The Canberra will be berthed at the city wharf, and the Sussex anchored in the stream. Official calls were paid and returned during the morning. A number of officers and men in the Canberra visited Auckland in 1933, and look forward to renewing friendships. Arrangements have been made by the Navy League. Harbour Board, and Missions to Seamen for the entertainment of the men during the week the squadron will be in Auckland.
