An official wireless message from Rugby announces that the Prime Minister (Mr Ramsay Macdonald) is recovering from his indisposition, but is still unable to go out or attend the House of Commons. Messrs A. Haig. L. Hughes, G. Catto, G. M. Aikman. F. S. Laycock (Dunedin). L. Amott. S. C. Stichbury (Wellington), and T. W. Vickery (Christchurch), are registered at the Grosvenor. News of the death of Judge John Barton Payne, chairman of the American Red Cross and of the Board of Governors of the League of Red Cross Societies, has been received at the New Zealand headquarters. Wellington. He was 80 years of age. A motion of sympathy in the death of his father was accorded Mr F. J. Cook at the annual meeting of the Star Football Club last night. The president (Mr A. G. Knowles) remarked that Mr Cook, secretary of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, was formerly a member of the Star Club. Acting on medical advice the Ven. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, M.A., vicar of St. Mary’s parish, is to leave Timaru on March 27 for Wellington to join the Tamaroa for England. The Archdeacon, who will be accompanied by Mrs Monaghan, will be on holiday for about 12 months. During the vicar’s absence the Rev. J. Evans will be priest in charge of the parish, and will reside at the vicarage. Appreciative reference to the services rendered the Club by Mr E. Firkin was made at the annual meeting of the Star Football Club last night. The president (Mr A. G. Knowles) said Mr Firkin, who had left the district, had given great sendee over a period of 25 years, and had been a keen and energetic member. On the motion of Messrs G. Adkins and J. Lewis, Mr Firkin was unanimously elected a life member of the Club. Mr P. Shaw, warehouse manager of the Auckland branch of Sargood, Son and Ewen. Ltd., has been appointed a director of that company. Mr Shaw joined the firm in 1903 at Dunedin, and with the exception of the war years, when he was overseas, he has spent the whole of his business career in the company’s service. Mr Shaw was for several years manager of the Invercargill branch, from which he was transferred to Auckland as warehouse manager.
