WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

PLEASANT POINT The fourth annual meeting of the Pleasant Point Women’s Institute was held in the Town Hall, Miss Kime presiding. The reports of the secretary and treasurer showed that a very successful year had been experienced. A letter was received from the secretary of the Disabled Soldiers’ Association acknowledging £3/14/- for goods sold and thanking the members for the practical assistance rendered. Letters were also received from the Town Board and Railway Department granting the Institute permission to beautify and keep in order the Soldiers’ and Coronation Memorials. During the afternoon two songs were sung by Mrs Percy Roberts and enjoyed by all. The competitions resulted:—Class A, leather gloves, Miss Kime 1; bowl of flowers, Mrs Lyon 1; scones, Mrs Lyon 1. Class B, leather gloves, Mrs Taylor 1; bowl of flowers, Mrs Smellie 1 and 2, Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Williams equal 3; scones, Mrs Chisholm 1, Mrs Turnbull 2, Mrs Herbert 3. Juniors, bowl of flowers, Miss Lyon 1; scones, Miss Cleland 1 and 2. The retiring officers were accorded a vote of thanks for their year's work. On the retirement of the president, Mrs Raymond, the secretary, called for nominations for the position of president, and Mrs Taylor was elected unopposed. Other officers were elected as follows:—Vice-presidents, Mesdames Cunningham and Kerslake; secretary. Miss H. Kime; assistant secretary, Mrs Candy; treasurer, Mrs Davison; committee, Mesdames Taylor, Cunningham, Candy, Davison, Kerslake, Liston, Turnbull, Arnott, Malcolmson, Christie, McPherson, E. Halstead, J. Murphy, Easterbrook, Popplewell, Wooffindin, Oliver, Herbert and Miss Kime. It was decided to hold the next meeting on April 4 as the South Canterbury Federation meeting was to be held on the Wednesday. The following were the afternoon tea hostesses—Mesdames Wooffindin, McNeur, P. Roberts, T. O’Connell, Grocott and the Misses Wooffindin, McCormack, C. McCormack and Stumbles. GLEN-ITI There was a good attendance at the second annual meeting of the Glen-iti Women’s Institute. An apology was received for Mrs Tripp. The election of officers resulted— President, Mrs Curr; vice-presidents, Mrs Browne and Mrs Rawson; secretary, Mrs Finlay; treasurer. Mrs Jackson; committee, Mesdames Breeze, Loomes, Winnington, Selbie, D. Ramsay, Stevens, Macdonald. A vote of sympathy was passed with Miss McAuley in the death of her father. It was decided to hold the April meeting on the second Wednesday instead of the first, owing to the halfyearly Federation meeting at Geraldine. During the afternoon a very interesting report of the Meaford Women’s Institute, Canada, written by Mrs John Randle (nee Miss M. Fyfe), formerly of Glen-iti, was read by Mrs Curr. A vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames Renton and Beckett for their help during the afternoon. Competitions resulted: —Best darned sock, Mrs Esler; economy rug, Mrs Esler 1, Mrs L. Clark 2, Mrs Morse and Mrs D. Ramsay equal 3; ginger-bread, Mrs D. Ramsay 1, Mrs Rawson 2, Mrs L. Clark 3; bottle of preserved peaches, Miss L. Pearse 1, Mrs Morse 2, Mrs E. H. Ffearse 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. Clark, Ruston, Selbie, and Misses Southgate and Cartwright.
