ORARI
HOME AND GARDEN COMPETITION The results of the Guyan A. M. Macdonald home and garden competition, held under the auspices of the Orari Horticultural Society, were announced by the president, Mr W. E. Cook, at the annual show last week. In making the announcement, the president thanked the judges, Messrs G. W. Coombes and G. H. Patrick, for their services, and congratulated the competitors on their painstaking efforts. It spoke well for the interest in the work of the Society when, out of a community of less than 100, sufficient competitors came forth to make the competition worth while. The percentage of competitors was far higher than the percentage of competitors in similar contests in the towns. Thanks were also due to Mrs G. M. Macdonald, Orari, and to Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., for presenting the major part of the prize money, the remainder being found by the Society. The competition had been won by Mr E. F. Carter, with 291 points, with Mrr W. J. Johnston second with 247 1 points An interesting feature of the competition was the awarding of prize* under sectional headings, thus atv tracting to the competition those who were interested mostly in the vegetable or flower side of the garden. The results under the sections were as follows:—Appearance, handiness and convenience, Mrs W. J. Johnston, *7B points, 1; E. F. Carter, 77 2. Vegetables, E. F. Carter. 89 points,? 1; Mrs W. J. Johnston, 86 points, 52. Fruit, B. Pierce, 67 points. 1; Carter, 60 points, 2. Flowers SBhd shrubs, E. R. O’Neill, 66 points) I;£E. F. Carter, 59i points, 2.
