CHILD MARRIAGES
SUPPORTED BY LEADING HINDUS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 10, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. The Bombay correspondent of “The Daily Mail” says: The imposition of a tax on all “spinsters” over eleven years of age, is the latest proposal of the orthhdox Hindus of Ahmedabad, in order to defeat the British Government Sarda Act which forbids girls marrying under fourteen. Orthodox Hindus insist that it is essential according to Hinduism for marriage at the earliest ages. They are accordingly trying to enforce marriages of girls between 9 and 11 years by penalising their parents to the extent of a rupee for every month the daughter is unmarried after eleven.
