“INSULT OFFERED TO CHRIST ”
RECEPTION OF EPSTEIN STATUARY INDIGNANT PROTEST BY CATHOLIC PRESS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 10, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 8. “The Catholic Herald,” commenting on Jacob Epstein’s statue of Christ, says: “It is painful to look at this sculpture, in which we only see a distorted reminiscence of debased sensuous flat features, of man, but of an Asiatic monstrosity. We protest against the insult offered Christ in this work of an artist and genius.”
“ALL TO INTERPRET” EPSTEIN’S REFUSAL TO COMMENT Cable messages from London on Friday reported that Jacob Epstein’s annual sensation is being exhibited at Leicester galleries. It is 11 feet of marble weighing seven tons, and representing Christ crowned with thorns. The rough simplicity of the carving recalls Easter Island figures. There is just enough detail to suggest tortured features and roped hands. The statue received a mixed Press reception. Epstein himself declined to explain. “I made it,” he said, “and there it is for all to interpret for themselves.”
