STARTLING STATEMENT IN PRESS
FEARS FOR DOMINIONS’ MEAT TRADE
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 10, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. "The “Daily Chronicle” declares that the meat situation, arising from Mr Elliot’s plan, threatens a first-class Empire crisis, involving the complete collapse of the Ottawa plan. The paper attributes the trouble to Vesteys’ secret development of chilled meat. Vestcyi now, with six new 10,000-ton ships and many vessels equipped for gas stoppage, from the Argentine trade, plan to replace Australian and New Zealand frozen meat by infinitely superior chilled meat. Moreover Vestys have acquired controlling interests in vital sections of the Australian and New Zealand meat trade exceeding £10,000,000. "The Daily Chronicle” adds: "Australia and New Zealand are most anxious to foster Vesteys’ enterprise by promising an increase in value of exports by 50 per cent. Their pronouncements leave no doubt as to their attitude, while the Argentine is also standing firm. Dr. Earle Page, Acting-Prime Minister, informed the press representatives that the Commonwealth will not accept the British meat import proposals, as they stand, which he says can only be introduced with the concurrence of all Empire countries.
