Nominations for the Waimate and South Canterbury meetings will be taken on Friday, March 22nd. Synagogue’s half-share of first and second money in the Futurity Stakes, in which he dead-heated with Heros, was exactly £I2OO. Two wins at Te Rape on Saturday took W. J. Broughton to the 60 mark, two points ahead of L. J, Ellis, who failed to land a winner on the day. The only racing fixture in the South Island this week is a minor one at Clifden, 65 miles north-west of Invercargill.
The Australian-bred three-year-old Fersen, who won the Taranaki Cup, but did not run up to expectations at Te Aroha, is to be spelled until next season.
Rey Spec's 4.24 in the Timaru Trotting Cup on Saturday constituted a new record for the track, but Little Nelson’s time of 4.25 was not a winning record, that distinction still remaining with Author Jinks at 4.25 1-5.
The chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, Mr A. S. Elworthy, who was absent in the south, telegraphed to the Timaru Trotting Club on Saturday expressing regret at his inability to be present, and wishing the Club a successful meeting.
John Jinks paced the fastest mile and a quarter at Washdyke on Saturday, and was putting in his best work at the finish. The half-brother to Author Jinks, who is now in M. G. McTigue’s stable in the Methven district, has lost none of his speed.
Arachne’s failure to finish closer than sixth in the Newmarket Handicap relieved Victorian bookmakers of a lot of liability and future anxiety. In addition to starting a hot favourite for the sprint, the filly was coupled for a lot of money with La Trobe for the Australian Cup. Mr W. F. James, the well-known totalisator proprietor, who underwent a serious operation some time ago, was a spectator at Washdyke on Saturday. He did not undertake any of the worries of running the machine, but the big increase in turnover must have been a source of gratification to him and his staff.
C. Dunlevey and J. Fraser continue their successful run with Mr G. J. Barton’s team. The Australian trotter Carl was never dangerous at Washdyke on Saturday, but Bracken and Black Jester, were always in the picture, and Bracken’s success in the Washdyke Handicap was richly deserved after three seconds to the stable.
Elvo may have been a bit short of work last week, but on the form she displayed at Washdyke she would not have much chance of fulfilling the prophecy that she will be in the next Trotting Cup. She was well enough placed at the half-way station in each of her races, but could make no further impression on the leaders. Rey Spec was responsbile for an attractive performance in the Timaru Cup, going a full second faster than any other horse in the race. His track record must have taken all the steel out of him, as he obviously decided that he had had enough for the day and declined to go away in the sprint race later on.
The three-year-old Graham Direct paced a brilliant final mile in the Seadown Handicap on Saturday. He was slow to gather speed, and at the mile post was a good 48 yards behind the leaders, but Big Author was the only one in front of him at the finish. He was driven by F. Holmes senr., who seems to get on well with this rather wayward youngster. The Wrack gelding Racketeer has been bought for £SOO and two contingencies of £IOO out of winnings by a patron of J. Bryce’s stable. Racketeer had been for sale for some weeks, without any anxiety to buy him, until he worked a sensational mile at Addington, as a result of which the market became agitated. It is reported that another trainer claims to have bought Racketeer, and that civil proceedings may eventuate.
The Municipal Band, no doubt as a result of its contest record, attracted a. lot of attention at the racecourse on Saturday. It is unquestionable that a good band is a uleasing accessory to a race meeting, and at present cannot be adequately replaced by “reproduced" music. Amplifiers are obtainable to give high-class results from records, but the cost of these is too high to make them available at present.
Little Nelson is inclined to be erratic at the start of his races, but he can put them in when he is on the way, and he simply spreadeagled the field at the end of a fast-run race in the Timaru Trotting Cup. The Tinwald pony must be the longest strider for his inches since Author Jinks, whose track record was broken on Saturday. There are few more consistent supporters of Washdyke metings than B. Grice, and Little Nelson’s victory was consequently a popular one. Big Author, who strolled home in the Seadown Handicap on Saturday, joined O. E. Hooper's stable shortly before the Timaru meeting in January. He brought an unbeaten certificate with him from Alexandra, but knocked himself when being unloaded from a float, and broke and ran off the course at the start. Big Author made full amends on Saturday. He was always well placed, and played with the opposition when the big question was asked him.
D. Teahen accounted for both events for unhoppled trotters at Washdyke on Saturday. Nelson Guy, a well-bred gelding by Real Guy from Effie Bingen, won the Kingsdown Handicap fairly comfortably after Isabel Patch had broken under pressure, but Teahen had an anxious drive behind Bosun, who just got home in the two-mile event. Bosun lost a good position by a tangle six furlongs from home, and right to the winning post he looked as if he might perform one of his hornpipes. His win was the reward of patient reinsmanship.

By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, March 9. The Forbury Park Trotting Club has been notified that its application to change the dates for its winter meeting to May 4 and 6 has been approved. This gives it a Saturday and the King’s Jubilee holiday, the Monday.
Cough and All Humbpg have rejoined F. W. ElUs’s active brigade at Invercargill.
The failure of the Metropolitan Trotting Club to arrange an Indian-apolis-Harold Logan match cannot be laid at the door of Mr G J. Barton or his trainer, who were prepared to agree to any kind of start, and were keen on the contest. The reported insistence of the Club on a flying start, so that a record could be attempted, is perhaps strange when it is considered that the totalisator cannot be operated except when a standing start is effected, but it is possible that other reservations, such as the distribution of the purse, were made by the Harold Logan people
