TIMARU TROTTING CUP

LITTLE NELSON WINS TROPHY

MARKED REVIVAL IN SPORT The recent upward trend in racing had inspired confidence that the Timaru Club’s autumn meeting would, with fine weather, be a profitable one, but the actual results exceeded the most sanguine expectations, and on the financial side the fixture should prove the best the Club has conducted for several seasons. The weather was delightful and the attendance was so good that at the lawn gate the takings showed an increase of £9O over last year's figures. The receipts from practically every source were greater, and the totalisator investments, amounting to £12,395, were approximately £2400 in excess of those a year ago, when £9997 was handled. The track was in fine condition, evidence of which was found in the consistently fast times registered. There were no protests or formal inquiries, the only untoward incident being a mishap which deprived Sea Peter’s backers of a run in * the Trial Handicap. Probably provision will be made to avoid a similar happening in future. Working under more pleasurable conditions than at the January meeting, the officials, both honorary and stipendiary, got through their work well, and the usual high standard of efficiency was maintained.

Presentation of Trophy. The Buchanan trophy, which was associated with the Timaru Trotting Cup, was presented to Mr P. E. Sutton, on behalf of the owner of Little Nelson (Mr B. Grice) by Mrs John Hole, wife of the president. Congratulations on Little Nelson’s performance were offered to Mr Grice by Mr Hole, who said that the race was run in fast time and had provided the public with excellent sport. Trotting folk would have to watch out that their horses did not go much faster, otherwise there would be little difference between the harness horse and the galloper. He thanked the owners for the support they always gave the Timaru Club, and said that with a little brighter tone apparent the committee hoped that the time was not far distant when stakes would be improved and owners receive a better reward. Mr Hole said that although there had been a little complaint about the track it could not be much better than it was that day. If it were possible to effect any improvement the committee would be fully alive to the position. He referred to the Buchanan trophy, and said that the thanks of the club were due to Mr A. P. Greenfield who had been successful in securing it. Mr Sutton apologised for the absence of Mr Grice, who desired to congratulate the club on being one of the most enterprising in the South Island. Mr Grice always did his best to have one or two horses at the Timaru meeting. Little Nelson was one of those in-and-out horses who did not always come to

light when expected, but he had ,that day run a fine race. Mr Sutton explained that Mr Grice’s retiring disposition prevented him from receiving the trophy. The president: He has secured a very fine substitute. Cheers were given for the owner, the driver, the Timaru Club and the preisdent. REVIEW OF THE RACING

The Novice Trotters. Travis Pringle 442, Esther 328, and Nelson Guy 297 were in most favour for the Kingsdown Handicap. Travis Pringle, Bon Haven. Silver Sea and Winsome Laddie all broke up early and took no further part in the proceedings. Esther led off from Renegade, but tangled on the first bend, and into the back the first time the order was Pleasant Voyage, Nelson Guy, Isabel Patch, Renegade, Chudleigh. Pleasant Voyage commenced the second lap attended by Isabel Patch, Nelson Guy, Chudleigh and Renegade, with Gyrate the only other handy. Isabel Patch took charge at the back and led round the top the last time from Nelson Guy and Chudleigh, who were clear of Renegade and Gyrate. Isabel Patch broke again under pressure in the straight leaving Nelson Guy to win by a length and a half from Isabel Patch, who beat Renegade by a short head. Chudleigh was fourth, two lengths away, then came Gyrate and Carl. Win for Favourite. Wee Wrack 443 and Colonel Bogey 434 disputed favouritism for the Trial Handicap, but there was good support for Dual 268, Shandon Chimes 255, Lady Hannah 246, Wheat Pool 245 and Snowy de Oro 233, and the favourites started at a remunerative price. Colleen Derby, Neola and Shandon Chimes broke up early. Cruiser led past the stand the first time from Zest, Prince de Oro, Colonel Bogey and Snowy de Oro, and along the back the order was Colonel Bogey, Zest, Prince de Oro, Snowy de Oro, Dual, leading a tight bunch. Coming down the straight the second time Cream Harvester broke and seriously interfered with Miss Hannah. Passing the Judge with a round to go, the reading was Colonel Bogey, Zest, Prince de Oro, Snowy de Oro, Dual, Wee Wrack and Sea Trail, but three furlongs from home Dual had taken charge from Colonel Bogey, Zest and Snowy de Oro, with Wee Wrack heading the next division. Wee Wrack joined Dual at the top, and the pair led into the straight from Snowy de Oro. Wee Wrack finished best and won by two lengths from Sea Trail, who beat Wheat Pool (a late arrival) by nearly three lengths. Dual was fourth two lengths away, with Colonel Bogey fifth. Sea Peter, who carried 62 tickets, buckled a sulky wheel just before the start, and the race was run without him. Cup to Little Nelson. Speculation was spirited again on the Timaru Trotting Cup, Bracken 588, Rey Spec 552, Great Logan 433, Elvo 420, Little Nelson 370, and Todd Lonzia 337 being the topliners in a pool nearly £SOO above last year’s. All the horses began correctly except Gunfire. Manoeuvre, Little Nelson, Bracken, Craganour and Mountain Ore were the early leaders, and passing the stand the first time, with half a mile covered, Manoeuvre, Little Nelson, Bracken, Craganour, Mountain Ore, Queen Author, Todd Lonzia, Great Logan, Elvo and Rey Spec were bunched, making a spectacular contest. Manoeuvre, Bracken, Little Nelson, Craganour and Todd Lonzia were still there at the mile, and leaving the straight with a round to go Bracken and Manoeuvre were just in front of Little Nelson, Mountain Ore and Elvo, with Craganour, Rey Spec and Queen Author in the third row, the field being bunched with the exception of Native Chief, John Jinks and Gunfire. There was little alteration until three furlongs from home, where Little Nelson and Bracken shot right away from the rest, and they turned for home with the race to themselves. Little Nelson outstayed Bracken to win by two lengths, with Rey Spec four lengths away. Two lengths further back came Todd Lonzia and Queen Author together, followed by Manoeuvre. Filly’s Easy Win. Dolly Derby and Lena Thorpe were withdrawn from the Fairlie Handicap, and of the remaining fourteen Village Guy 523, Lone Derby 419, Royal de Oro 349, and Grace McElwyn 348 had most admirers. Tatsy de Oro broke badly at the start and interfered with Gay Sister. Grace McElwyn was first away from Lone Derby, Marie Celeste and Black Jester, and at the stand the order was Lone Derby, Marie Celeste, Grace McElwyn, Royal de Oro, Black Jester, War Officer. Speeding up the back Marie Celeste and Lone Derby, Black Jester and Grace McElwyn, Royal de Oro and War Officer were running in pairs, and it was the same at the top, with Village Guy the only other in sight. Once in the straight Grace McElwyn shot to the front, and won decisively by two lengths from Black Jester, who wore Lone Derby down and beat him by a length. Marie Celeste was half a length further back, with Battlefield fifth. Big Author Romps Home. There were five well-backed candidates —Harold Wrack 581, Noble Prince 480, Paragon 472, Graham Direct 423, and Big Author 312—in the Seadown Handicap. Harold Wrack, Charteris Vale and Midnight Sun failed to go away to time, and Graham Direct was a bit slow. Finnebrogue took up the running from Noble Prince, Big Author, Paragon and Silver Axworthy. The last-named compounded at the mile, and with a round to go the call was Finnebrogue, Noble Prince, Big Author, Paragon, Golden Square, well clear of War Betty and Graham Direct. Finnebrogue cracked up going to the far

turn, leaving Big Author, Noble Prince, Paragon and Graham Direct out by themselves. At the top Big Author shot away with Graham Direct and Paragon in pursuit, and the Alexandraowned gelding won looking round by four lengths from Graham Direct, who beat Colene Parrish by three lengths. Paragon and Golden Square were next. The Two-Mile Trot. Apart from Sonoma King 532. betting was very evenly distributed on the Temuka Handicap, Bosun 389, Ann Parrish 351, Travis Pringle 345, Bon Haven 272, and sabel Patch 240 all being fancied. The field trotted correctly until Silver Sea compounded after going a furlong. Isabel Patch, Bosun and Ann Parrish went away smartly, and at the stand the first time Isabel Patch and Ann Parrish were together, attended by Esther, Bosun and Travis Pringle. When the mile was reached Isabel Patch and Ann Parrish were still carrying on from Esther, Bosun, Travis Pringle and Winsome Laddie, and there was no change as they began the concluding round except that Bosun had lost a bit of ground. They trotted in this way to the far turn, and at the top Ann Parrish and Isabel Patch were just in front of Winsome Laddie, Bosun and Travis Pringle. A furlong from home Isabel Patch left her feet, and Winsome Laddie moved up with Bosun trailing him. Carefully nursed by Teahen, Bosun got home by a head from Winsome Laddie, who beat Travis Pringle by three lengths. Bon Haven was fourth, two lengths further away, coming from the back to head Ann Parrish on the post. Another to Methven. Grace McElwyn was the only defection from the Wai-iti Handicap field. The Lone Derby-Marie Celeste couplet headed the market with 607 units, with Village Guy 565, Black Jester 452. and Battlefield 350 carrying most of the other money. Happy Lass broke just after the start and wrecked the chance of Battlefield, but all the others began correctly. Black Jester, Lone Derby, Marie Celeste, Gay Sister and Ruin led round the top bend, and at the end of half a mile Black Jester had drawn out from Lone Derby, Marie Celeste and Gay Sister, with a gap to Ruin, Dolly Derby and Village Guy. Along the back Black Jester, Marie Celeste, Lone Derby and Gay Sister were pacing in that order well clear of Dolly Derby and Village Guy. There was no alteration at the top, but in the straight Black Jester and Marie Celeste drew away, and in a good finish between them Marie Celeste won by a long neck. Three lengths away came Lone Derby,, two lengths in advance of Village Guy and Gay Sister.

End of a Perfect Day. All the acceptors went to the mark for the Washdyke Handicap except Craganour. In a big pool, Taxpayer 820, Rey Spec 763, Bracken 717 and Elvo 704 made a nice market for speculators, but Rey Spec stood on the mark. Mountain Ore broke at the start, and Willow Wave went off badly. Morning Sun, Taxpayer, Queen Author and Bracken was the order at the end of a furlong, and with a mile to go Queen Author, Bracken, Morning Sun, Taxpayer and John Jinks were bunched, several lengths ahead of the backmarkers, Native Chief and Elvo. Going to the far turn Bracken, Queen Author, Morning Sun, Taxpayer and John Jinks were six lengths in advance of Native Chief, and rounding the top they commenced to widen the gap. Bracken was first into the straight from Taxpayer, Queen Author and John Jinks, and in a good finish she held off Taxpayer and defeated him by a neck, with John Jinks half a length away. Morning Sun and Queen Author close up, were the only others in sight. The exciting finish was a fitting conclusion to a fine day’s sport.

TRIBUTE TO POPULAR PRESIDENT

GC OD WISHES OF TROTTING CLUB

The good wishes of the committee and stewards of the Timaru Trotting Club were conveyed to the highly esteemed president (Mr John Hole) at a gathering after the first race on Saturday, when a presentation to mark his eighty-fourth birthday was made. Mr Hole’s long association with the sport, the great interest he had always taken in the club, and his universal popularity, were no doubt responsible for the enthusiasm which was displayed by every member of the gathering.

Mr J. Gilmore, vice-president, in presenting Mr Hole with a bridge cabinet and a silver cigarette lighter, referred to the good work that had been done by the president over a long period of years. The committee and stewards felt that they could not let his birthday pass without some slight expression of the regard in which Mr Hole was held by all. “I hope that you will be with us for a long time yet, and that you will continue your good work for the club as enthusiastically in the future as you have in the past,” said Mr Gilmore amidst applause. “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” was sung, and Mr Hole’s health was enthusiastically drunk. Mr Hole said he did not know how to thank the gathering for their good wishes and for the handsome present. During the week he had been overwhelmed with congratulations on his birthday from members of the club, and he appreciated their kindness and sincerity very much. His relations with the club had always been of the best, and he did not really need any gift to remind him of the many happy associations he had had with the sport and its followers. He was very pleased with the gift, and it would fit in very nicely with a card table that had been presented to him on a recent evening. Cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Hole, and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" was again sung.
