DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

TOWN BOARD MEETS

- The annual sports gathering of the District High School was held at the Domain on Thursday afternoon in fine weather. There was a fair attendance. The officials controlling the programme were : Supervisor, Mr F. C. G. Malcolmson; starter, Mr J. Dossett; judges—running, Messrs Halstead, Arnott and Blissett,; jumping, Miss McBean and Mr A. K. Easterbrook; timekeepers, Dr. Benham and Mr E. Ryan; record clerk, Mr W. Wakefield. At the conclusion of the events, Mr W. B. Oborn, chairman of the School Committee, thanked all who had supported the gathering and introduced Mr Laverty, president of the South Canterbury School Committees’ Association who would give a short address and present the silver cups. Mr Laverty expressed pleasure at the privilege of being asked to attend. He took it as a compliment to the School Committees’ Association, the aim of which was to do all possible to help country schools. He knew the difficulties under which country committees laboured, and his mission was to urge them to join the association, so that a united body of all the school committees could place their views before the Government of the day with one strong voice. He also urged the women’s organisations to take a greater interest in school committee work. Lady members on the committees had proved a great success wherever they had been elected. l He congratulated the school on being able to organise such a pleasant and successful sports gathering. A point which had appealed to him had been the fine spirit shown by the children in the various events. The defeated had always readily congratulated the victors. This fine sportsmanship of gracefully accepting defeat was a great character builder and reflected good training.
