FAIRLIE

DENTAL CLINIC A meeting of representatives from schools attached to the Fail-lie Dental Clinic was held in the Fairlie School. The following schools were represented:—Mt. Nessing, P. Kidd; Sherwood, T. Moorehead; Ashwick Flat, M. Black; Fairlie, W. Manchester and H. Carlton. Mr H. Carlton was elected chairman and Mr J. A. Fraser secretary. The executive consists of the chairman, Mr T. B. Crampton, and secretary. The chairman referred to the retirement of Mr C. J. Talbot from the committee, and a resolution of appreciation for his services was passed. The balance sheet showed a considerable amount of money outstanding in fees. Members expressed the hope that parents would make payments for attention promptly so that reduction of future fees could be c nsidered. A maximum charge of 10/- to families was decided upon. Mr Kidd proposed that in each year all children should have treatment twice if necessary. This was agreed upon. SCHOOL COMMITTEE At a meeting of the Committee of the Fairlie District High School, Mr H. Carlton, who presided, said that at the annual excursion to Caroline Bay there was a large attendance of children and adults. A loading of 9d had been made in each adult ticket and the sum of £7/15/0 was raised to assist the schc. 1 funds. Mr Surridge expressed the opinion that a smaller loading might be made next year. Mr C. D. Gilling, headmaster, reported that the roll number was 175 and the average attendance 159.1. One would think that with 175 on the roll the present grade of the school was assured, but by the attendance of recent weeks it was very evident that maintainance of the present grade was most unlikely. Mr Carlton stated that during the time the school was closed the teachers had been present each afternoon at. the swimming baths to instruct the children. Mr Gilling had written to the Mackenzie County Council referring to the cleaning of the baths but so far had received no reply. The balance-sheet for the financial year ended February 28 showed a credit of £6/15/7. Messrs T. H. C. Martin and Mr E. Goodwin were appointed visitors for the month. It was decided to hold a bottle drive to help the school funds, and Mr Martin offered a fountain pen to the child collecting the largest sum.
